Mellencamp joins effort to lure IU fans

John Mellencamp will perform his new song “Our Country” prior to the Indiana-Michigan State game on Saturday. Mellencamp recently sang the same song on national TV to open Game 2 of the World Series.

Mellencamp, a big supporter of IU athletics, is a friend of coach Terry Hoeppner who came to the press conference in September when Hoeppner announced he would undergo brain surgery for the second time.

IU officials said Tuesday that they have launched an all-out campaign to draw fans Saturday – including telemarketing, an e-mail campaign to fans, an advertising blitz and stationing ticket office officials on campus to sell to students – but they claimed not to have any current numbers on how many tickets they’ve sold toward Hoeppner’s goal of 50,000.
