Off topic – Interesting Pacers question

I just got a unusual call from a reporter in Israel who has heard that guard Sarunas Jasikevicius is leaving the Pacers, which I thought might interest some of our Indiana basketball fans.

I can’t confirm whether or not Jasikevicius leaving is true, but with the deadline for cuts today, it’s an interesting possibility.

Jasikevicius, a sports celebrity while playing in Israel, was hand-picked by Larry Bird to join the Pacers before last season and received a reported $12 million, 3-year contract. But he was a disappointment last season and in the preseason this year. The Indianapolis media has been reporting the Pacers will have to cut one of their promising newcomers to get down to the 15-man limit, but that may change if Jasikevicius is traded or cut.

  1. It turns out there may not be anything to the Tel Aviv Scoop.

I just heard that the Pacers cut veteran backup John Edwards, which was expected, and second-round pick James White, which Larry Bird certainly didn’t expect after the Pacers traded their No. 45 pick from the 2006 draft, Florida State power forward Alexander Johnson, and two future second-round picks to Portland to obtain White.

“It’s a bargain, believe me,” Bird is quoted on the Pacers’ Web site about the trade to acquire White, which was criticized by ESPN. “You’ll see that in the next few weeks.”
