Win over Iowa convinces JUCO Burrus to commit to IU

The excitement of Saturday’s win over Iowa erased any doubts Kevin Burrus had about playing at Indiana.

Burrus, the brother of Indiana defensive lineman Keith Burrus, called Terry Hoeppner this week and told him he will play for the Hoosiers next season.

“The Iowa game made a big impression,” Burrus said. “(The Hoosiers) are on the rise.”

Burrus, a 305-pound, 6-2 1/2 defensive tackle, was an all-state player as a senior at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. He planned to play at Coffeyville Community College, but took a redshirt season, he said, after suffering a groin injury.

Burrus said he was receiving recruiting interest from Auburn, Southern Mississippi and Southern Methodist, but Indiana was the first major college to offer him a scholarship. He said the great experience his brother Keith, a sophomore defensive end, has had at IU made this week’s decision easy.

“They want to win,” Kevin Burrus said of the Hoosiers. “They love the game and the love each other.”

Burrus is IU’s ninth 2007 recruit. He expects to start classes in Bloomington in January and have three seasons of eligibility at IU. He said the Hoosier coaching staff told him they need him to be ready to see playing time right away next season.
