Dinner for….a few thousand

A crowd of about 1,200 people gathered at Assembly Hall Wednesday night for the inaugural Indiana Basketball tip-off dinner. Forty four former players attended the event – a concept Sampson brought with him from Oklahoma – as well as this year’s team.

“Thank you for your love and support of the basketball program,” senior Earl Calloway told the crowd.

Bloomington North graduate Errek Suhr told them, “We’re not going to let another year go by that is filled with disappointment.”

Sampson took the podium last and told of Tuesday’s two practice sessions. The early morning session began at 5:45 a.m. and the afternoon session at 3 p.m.

At about 10:30 Tuesday night, Sampson said he received a text message from one of his assistant coaches saying that senior guard Rod Wilmont had just finished hitting 181 out of 300 3-pointers in the gym.

He told the fans to expect hard work but tried to divert talk of adding a sixth banner to the rafters.

>“You can’t promise that,” he said. “You have to earn it.”
