Your predictions for this Indiana basketball team?

With the start of Indiana’s season arriving Monday, we’re looking for your predictions on this year’s record and your comments about the 2006-07 Hoosiers.

What are your predictions and expectations for this Hoosier team? What would make you feel satisfied with Sampson and his first Indiana team? If we get enough good predictions and comments here, we’ll publish some of them in Monday’s H-T before the first game.

I’m predicting a 21-10 in the regular season, which will be good enough to get into the NCAA Tournament. That record would also be IU’s best regular season mark since Bob Knight’s final two seasons, 22-9 in 1998-99 and 20-7 in 1999-2000. Mike Davis’ best regular season record was 19-10 in 2001-02, the year IU made it to the NCAA championship game. Last year, IU was 17-10 in the regular season before going 1-1 in the Big Ten Tournament and 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament.

This year, I’ll predict a 23-12 final record with one win in the NCAA Tournament.

This year’s team will play better defense and rebound better because Kelvin Sampson will demand it. But the Hoosiers don’t appear to have any all-Big Ten calibre talent other than D.J. White. Their schedule is easier this year with preconference home games against Indiana State, Chicago State, Western Illinois, Western Michigan, Ball State, as well as Lafayette and IUPUI in Indianapolis. That should be seven sure wins right there. They will have to go 14-10 in their other games to make it to 21-10.

It should help Indiana that the Big Ten doesn’t look particularly strong. Illinois and Michigan State will be younger and not as tough. Ohio State is exceptionally talented with its top-rated freshman class, but has only one starter returning. Wisconsin, with Alando Tucker and a veteran lineup, looks like the most solid team to me, although Ohio State is probably the stronger post-season threat.

Here’s IU’s schedule:

  1. Let’s say 21-12 heading into the NCAA’s. Pre-conference record of 10-4, Big Ten record of 10-6, 1 loss at UConn, and 1-1 in Chicago at the BTT. This would get us a 7 seed out West, where we win three games before bowing out in the Regional Final. I think we still struggle to win road games against middle to upper Big Ten teams, but hold serve at home (except for a lone home loss by 3 points). Of course, this is just a prediction if I were a betting man. Otherwise we lose twice pre-conference, roll to 13-3 in the Big Ten, make the finals in Chicago, and go down in the title game versus Duke.

  2. My guess would be 17-11, ending up 4th in the Big 10. Should get into the NCAA’s advancing to the Sweet 16. Ben’s development will be key in determining how IU fares.

  3. I will go with 11-4 in non-conference games and 12-4 in the Big 10 for a total record of 23-8. I then think we will go 2-1 in the Big 10 tourny and 2-1 in the NCAA for a final record of 27-10.

  4. My cracked crystal ball shows a 20-11 regular season for the Hoosiers. Tough losses include the Duke, UK, UCONN and (gasp!) the away PU game.

In the Big 11 Tournament, I see 2 wins.

This lands the Hoosiers in the Show with a 22-12 and a decent seed. They will fall one game short of the Sweet 16, and will have a respectable 24-13 final record.

  5. Who cares about records? Here are the real prediction questions:

    1. How many times during nationally televised IU games will Dick Vitale mention Bob Knight’s name or say IU should rename its basketball court for Knight?

    2. How quiet will Assembly Hall go the first time DJ White lands awkwardly on one of his feet?

    3. How many shots will Adam Ahlfeld get to shoot this year? (Hint: The higher this number the better our record.)

    4. How many phone call jokes will opposing fans make?

    Good luck, guys.

  6. I say 21-10 with losses at Dook and UConn. Third in the Big Ten behind Wisconsin and Ohio State. That should get IU a 5 seed in the NCAA against a dangerous 12-seed from the MAC or other mid-major. I forsee a squeaker in the first round, but a trip to the Sweet 16. Not much farther though.

  7. I have more of a question. I saw where both Bob Knight & Kelvin Sampson were to be in Las Vegas for an Adidas Basketball Clinic in late Sept. What’s the relationship with these two? I’ve heard it was great, then heard it cooled a few years ago after Sampson kept beating Knight’s teams, and Knight accused Sampson of cheating, more or less, with the play clock. I think it is important for both parties that IU and Knight reconcile. Anyways, IU will be a 20 win team this season. I like them to get in the NCAA tourney and make the second round. Fans will generally be pleased with the style of play.

  8. I think IU will be more competitive this year. Coach Sampson seems to have the players respect and they are ready to perform. They seem more disciplined and instead of running the ball down the court and shooting threes, they work the ball and are patient. I think there will be some close games, especially with Purdue, Duke and UConn. I think we will get into the Sweet 16.

    Any extra tickets??

  9. i think 22 and 9 before btt, after that anything can happen. i dont see any chance at all of the hoosiers being as soft under this man as they were under the former idiot at the helm. while davis might be a “nice guy” that doesnt carry anything onto the court except that he would maybe say “thank you” while you were giving him a good old fashioned butt kickin. while i am making a prediction for the hoosiers let me make one for davis and i have watched bball for about 40yrs and follow it very closely, i think the max. time he will spend as a head coach @ uab will be three yrs and it may not take the university that long to find out he should be coaching 5th grade girls. by the way no offense intended to 5th grade girls !

  10. THE SUN IS BRIGHTLY SHINNING ON THE WATERS OF LAKE WAWASEE AND SEASON OF THE HOOSIERS. I JUST HAD CATARACT SURGERIES AND IMY EYES ARE CLEAR AND I SEE A BLAZING SEASON…HOOSIERS 26 AND 5 THEN TO THE SWEET SIXTEEN FOR ANOTHER WIN BEFORE BOWING OUT…..IN OVERTIME!!!

  11. Hi Mike, it’s terrific to hear that your cataract surgery went so well! Do think Kelvin Sampson’s guys can move as fast as those cooks at the Cove Inn?

  12. Be soothed: Allen stops his impersonation of B. Stiller’s “sweataphobe”, team stops mimicking former coach’s continual expression of, “what?” Sampson bans Messiahworth dirty tricks under bucket, and Hoosiers doggedly learn new offense, rejecting improbable “spermatazoa” scheme of late.23-8
Be scared: Allen still deep safety, JUCOs ask,”What?”, team can’t play Calloway’s tempo, hit critical FT’s, better game plans by Weber, Izzo, Matta, Ryan, ugly nat’l audience losses at Duke, UConn, Holman shoves mother down stairs…18-13 NIT

  13. THE KELVINATOR GIVES US ALL HOPE. AFTER THE GLOOM AND DOOM OF THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. I’M THINKING POSITIVE AND BELIEVE WE’LL BE IN THE ELITE EIGHT! WE ARE READY TO RUMBLE.

DOUG — MY FRIEND SUE ELLEN DISTRIBUTES IU POSTER CALENDARS W/CO NAME EACH YEAR — HUGE FAN
    HUGS AUNT GINNIE

  14. Great Kelvin Sampson hater t-shirt at this website…….www.all-wear.com…….. I know some of you who read this thing aren’t Indiana fans. Sampson is a creep. He broke the rules at Oklahoma, he’ll break the rules here. He’s gotten a freckle for every rule he’s broken. ILL-INI…..

  15. Hootie, you forgot to predict IU’s record this year. Also, Doug and Chris, I ordered each of you one these shirts, and one for Houser too. I’ll find you at Conseco Monday night before the game to hand them out. Go Squad!

  16. Thanks everybody for your predictions. Some good Hoosier basketball talk and some funny stuff here. We’ll have excerpts from as many of them as we can in Monday’s paper. And Jeff, are you trying to get us in trouble with those T-shirts? I feel like we’re already in the doghouse half the time with IU coaches and staff, and that shirt could take care of the other half! Just kidding, of course.

  17. Here are some number-based predictions:
1 winning season with the potential for a deep run in the tournament.
5 guys on the floor, playing their butts off every game.
2 guys no one sees coming, having great years (Keeling, Suhr?).
1 family of IU fans no longer bickering amongst one another.
1 state full of whining, booing, losing Illini.
    GO HOOSIERS!

  18. My predictions are that after the bumpy start we have had already and the lousy officiating Indiana is going to be in a lot of foul trouble this season. But I do believe that Indiana and Kelvin Sampson will win the Big 10 tournament and will go on to the sweet 16 getting beat by none other than Duke Blue Devils. Season record will be 21-10. GO HOOSIERS US DIE HARD FAN ARE ON YOUR SIDE. Hey Hootie we all make mistakes give Sampson a fair chance. ARE YOU PERFECT? I THINK NOT
