Fort Wayne defensive lineman commits to Indiana

Fort Wayne defensive lineman Mick Mentzer has given Indiana its 11th verbal commitment for its 2008 recruiting class, Mentzer’s high school coach confirmed Thursday night.

The 6-3 Mentzer is playing at about 285 pounds this summer, according to Fort Wayne Dwenger coach Chris Svarczkopf. Mentzer is expected to play defensive line at IU, although he has played many positions at Dwenger – linebacker, fullback and offensive and defensive line.

He also had scholarship offers from Northern Illinois and Ball State, Svarczkopf said.

Mentzer’s decision to attend IU was first reported by one of his friends on an IU football message board. He is the fourth 2008 recruit to give the Hoosiers a verbal commitment this week.
