Thomas a no-show, recruit game schedule almost set

DeShaun Thomas, the highly-sought after 2010 recruit from Fort Wayne, didn’t make it to Cincinnati today. A family issue forced him to stay home. It’s unclear whether he’ll miss the entire It Takes 5 tournament at this point.

Thomas seems to still be leaning strongly toward Ohio State. He gave Buckeyes coach Thad Matta a verbal commitment earlier this summer but took it back at his family’s urging. Time may change things, but for now it seems Thomas is intent on playing his college basketball in Columbus.

Tyler Zeller, the 7-footer from Washington, said that right now he’s exploring two aspects at each of the nine schools he’s still considering: his future teammates and the academic programs. He’ll trim his list to five in August.

He wants to play with guys he likes. Purdue’s four class of 2007 recruits — Robbie Hummel, JuJuan Johnson, Scott Martin and E’Twaun Moore — bonded with Zeller last month. Their senior Indiana All-Star team played Zeller’s Junior All-Star team three times. They’re pushing for him to become a Boilermaker.

Here’s an interesting line Zeller said about Purdue’s coaches: “The coaches are truthful. There’s nothing suspicious about them.”

Zeller said that Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson’s recruiting style doesn’t differ from what most coach do. He strikes up conversations or just texts, “How is your day?” or “What are your plans for the weekend?”. Zeller said he’s having a hard time distinguishing between coaches after being recruited for so long.

Indiana’s class of 2007, all six of whom are on campus and enrolled in summer classes, will join together to play at least five games in early August across the state of Indiana.

Here’s the tentative schedule. More details to follow.

August 2: New Albany

August 3: Batesville

August 7: North Davies

August 9: Muncie

TBA: Indianapolis (probably North Central HS)

That’s all I’ve got for now. We’re heading back to Bloomington. Enjoy your Friday night.
