Jane Hoeppner at Big Ten kickoff luncheon

After all she’s been through this summer, Jane Hoeppner is still getting ready for football season.

Hoeppner attended the Big Ten Football Kickoff Luncheon in Chicago today. She went there with her friend Tammy Walker, the wife of late Northwestern football coach Randy Walker.

She said that Wednesday morning, she and Tammy talked about how strange it was to have neither of their husbands with them, but the two women decided they still wanted to attend the kickoff luncheon.

“Randy and Terry should be here,” Hoeppner said with tears in her eyes. “It’s so sad.”

Even though she lived in Oxford, Ohio for 19 years before IU hired her husband, Hoeppner said she didn’t have any thoughts about leaving Bloomington after her husband died.

“Bloomington is home,” she said.

Part of the reason for that, she said, is the tremendous outpouring of support for her family during and after her husband’s illness.

Hoeppner said there’s no doubt about whether she’ll attend Indiana’s games this fall because it’s what she does in the fall and she can’t imagine doing anything else.

“I’m looking forward to the season,” she said. “It’s going to be a great season.”

Indiana senior Tracy Porter gave some details Wednesday about the additions to Indiana’s uniforms to honor Terry Hoeppner.

Porter said Indiana’s jerseys will have a black and white patch on one shoulder that says “Hep” and helmets will have a decal that says “Play 13.”

What a great lady. She embodies the spirt and passion for IU and for Bloomington that her husband did. I will miss seeing coach on the sideline, but know he will be looking down cheering the boys on to “Play 13!”
