Hoosier Women Take On Ark.-Pine Bluff

INDIANA (2-0) bests ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF (0-2) with 74-56 win

Bloomington’s own Whitney Thomas ties a career high with 21 points, including a 9-for-10 effort at the charity stripe. Nikki Smith finished with 14 points, 11 of them in the first half. IU is now 2-0 for the second straight season, though in the two seasons before that, the Hoosiers opened the season with games against Baylor, ranked in the top 10 both times.

Second Half:

Indiana 51, Ark-PB 22: Whitney Thomas has five points in the early goings, including 3-3 from the free throw line, an area that’s not always her best. She leads all scorers with 13 points.

Indiana 54, Ark-PB 26: It’s Thomas again with another three-point play. She corrals the rebound after Amber Jackson’s try hung forever on the rim. Thomas has 16 points with just under 15 minutes to go.

Indiana leads the Lady Lions 33-19 in rebounding with just under 12 minutes left in the game. The Hoosiers lost the boards category in the second exhibition game and again in the season opener, depsite winning both games.

Georgia Follmer, newest tallest Hoosier at 6-4, gets whisteld for a foul with 9:48 to go while attempting a block. IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack doesn’t care though, hopping off the bench and empatically applauding the freshman’s effort.

Indiana 67, Ark-PB 50: A bit of lackadaisical play has seen the Lady Lions get back to a more respectable deficit. Some of these late points have come off IU turnovers that probably could have easily been prevented with a tad more focus. Time is short though, with only 3:50 left in the game.

Final Score: Indiana 74, Ark-PB 56

First Half:

Hoosier sophomore F/G Kim Roberson is inactive for tonight’s game. IU media relations informs me she is “day-to-day,” and that is all. Freshman guard Jori Davis started in her place.

Indiana 19, Ark-PB 12: Nikki Smith has decided there will be no repeat of Friday’s rough shooting on her end. She’s already nailed three 3s and a shorter jumper for 11 of IU’s points in the first eight minutes.

Indiana 33, Ark-PB 14: Davis is playing super fast and super strong her first start. She fed Amber Jackosn underneath with a sweet pass that wrapped around a defender and has hit some shots of her own.

Indiana 41, Ark-PB 18: Everybody’s getting in on the act for the Hoosiers, apparently ready and able to put that 0-for-14 3-point effort behind them. Freshmen Ebony Jackson and Haylie Linn have both hit from behind the arc. 1:40 to go in the first half.

Things are looking well for IU, as walk-on Lydia Serfling checks in for the final 40 seconds of the first half.

Halftime Score: Indiana 42, Ark-PB 21: Smith’s 11 leads the way, and Amber Jackson pulled down six rebounds, but the big story is Indiana’s 60.7% shooting in the half. Including, might I add, 7-of-9 on 3-pointers.
