IU vs. HOOSIER LADY STARS

Second Half:

Lady Stars center Courtney Urquhart finally converts a 2-point basket for the visitors, although the team continues to fire up 3s as the first option.

At 11:27 to go, IU has turned the ball over on two straight possessions. Perhaps fatigue is setting in for the younger ladies, but the lead is still a comnfortable 17 points after Lady Stars’ Kina Brown’s jumper makes the score 57-40.

Jamie Braun shows how not to let the tired legs affect one with a beautiful 3-pointer right about the 10-minute mark.

Kim Roberson gets a rousing cheer for an effort to keep the ball on IU’s side of the floor, but the Hoosiers then turn it over anyway.

Nikki Smith tries to end the mini-drought with a driving layup but scares the crowd when she lands very hard on her back and leaves the floor limping in tears of agony. She remains on the bench to watch, a good sign the injury is not horrendous. Smith and Jamie Braun lead the Hoosiers in scoring with 13 points each.

Braun is fouled hard while the Lady Stars attempt to get back in the game with the score only a 14-point difference. Amy Astutz-Watson is called for the technical after taking out Braun’s legs, though it didn’t appear intentional.

A Haylie Linn 3 is followed right away by a Jamie Braun steal and layup to give the Hoosiers decisive control again.

Walk-on Lydia Serfling checks in for IU at the 2:14 mark. The former Bloomington North player got a nice ovation from the crowd, and an even nicer round of applause when she scrapped for a couple rebounds in scrap time.

FINAL SCORE: Indiana 77, Hoosier Lady Stars 49

Stats: Jamie Braun led all scorers with 17 points and had 3 assists. Jori Davis had 7 rebounds for the Hoosiers, as did Whitney Thomas and Georgia Follmer. For the Lady Stars, Kia Hayes hit five 3s and finished with 16 points.

First Half:

Kim Roberson got things rolling quickly for Indiana, making two shots in the opening minute. The rest of the five starters did not heistate to get involved with the action, as Nikki Smith made a 3, Jamie Braun converted a 3-point play, and even Whitney Thomas drained a 3 from the top of the key.

IU built a 17-0 lead to open the game before Amy Amstutz-Watson got the Lady Stars on the board with a 3.

Jori Davis an Haylie Linn were the first two freshmen off the bench for IU, followed by Whitney Lindsay and then Ebony Jackson.

7:00 mark…The Lady Stars have reverted to firing up three-pointers to get back in the game. Kia Hayes just hit two in the last two trips down the floor to bring the visitors within 34-18.

Whitney Thomas leads all scorers with 10 points in 12 minutes played. She’s hit 4 of her first 5 shots.

Georgia Follmer has now checked in as well for Indiana, leaving just walk-on Lydia Serfling as the only dressed player that hasn’t checked in for the home team. Andrea McGuirt is on the Hoosier bench, but she is dressed in street clothes while recovering from surgery on her knee.

At the 4:48 mark, another Kia Hayes 3 gives the Lady Stars 21 points, a result of 7 made 3s.

Tina Bolte hits another 3 for the Lady Stars, giving them 8 made and 24 points.

IU’s Whitney Lindsay gets a steal on the left side and races untoched the other way for an easy layup right before the end of the half.

The Lady Stars are finally trying some closer range shots, but a miss at the buzzer leaves them with no field goals inside the arc.

HALFTIME: Indiana 47, Hoosier Lady Stars 24
