Spring football starts Tuesday

It may still look and feel like winter, but Indiana’s spring football will begin tomorrow with an afternoon practice.

Players will be in shorts for that practice and for the second spring practice Thursday. The first practice in pads will be Friday.

Other notes for the start of spring practice:

IU will open with sophomores Ben Chappell and Mitchell Evans 1-2 at quarterback. We have no update on the status of Kellen Lewis, but will try to get one tomorrow.

WR Andrew Means will not participate in spring practice because he’s playing on IU’s baseball team (hitting .390 and leading the Hoosiers in stolen bases). WR Terrence Turner will see limited spring play because of knee surgery last fall.

RB Marcus Thigpen is expected to participate in spring practice one day per week. He is a sprinter on the IU track team and will focus more on that sport this spring.

IU will hold scrimmages that are open to the public on April 5 and 11. The spring game will be on April 19 at 2 p.m.

Offensive lineman A.J. Thompson and defensive lineman Kyle Kozak are the only new scholarship players this spring. Both are early enrollees from IU’s 2008 recruiting class.

  1. IU Jimmy – I don’t know if you are being sarcastic or not, but if not, that is exactly how I feel.

The offensive side of the ball should be interesting, Chappell is a very good QB, smart pocket passer, and yes he can scramble and run, though not like Lewis does. If Chappell is our QB of the future, the offensive line has really got to step up and give him time to read his progressions.

Marcus Thigpen not being in the backfield for spring practice is not a big deal. With McCray becoming healthy, Payton returning off a break out year, and the addition of Darrius Willis this summer, IU will be set at running back. Watch for Thigpen to be using that sprinters speed on punt and kick returns, and has the slot reciever on offense, not as a running back.

I would like to see Andrew Means in spring practice, to get his timing with Chappell down, though I honestly expect Lewis to return this summer and earn his starting job back.

Can’t wait for the updates Chris and Doug!

  2. Yay, I’m so glad FB is back! I hope the stuff with Lewis gets worked out. I’m going to miss Hardy and Porter though… oh well. Time to find the next stars of IU football. I can’t wait for next fall.

  3. Believe me, I’m not being sarcastic at all. I love football and I can’t wait to go to the spring game.
