Mackey back in jail

Former IU basketball recruit Bud Mackey has been jailed on contempt of court charges, according to a Lexington, Ky. TV station.

Originally arrested on cocaine trafficking charges last September, Mackey was playing basketball in Cincinnati, but is now in trouble for dropping out of school and moving back home without informing the court.

The former Kentucky Mr. Basketball candidate faces the possibility of up to 10 years on the drug charges. His trial starts on Aug. 25, Lexington’s Channel 18 news reported.

  1. Wow. Really sad. This tells me everything I need to know about the kind of guys good ol’ Sampson recruited. Did he care at all about integrity or character? I mean this guy is trafficing crack and bouncing from state to state without informing the court. What a joke. Sampson better hope he never runs into an IU fan after one of his sorry Milwaukee Bucks games.

  2. Fortunately he got caught before Sampson could get him to IU. Another fine example of Kelvin not caring or not having a clue about the type of players he was willing to bring in.

  3. Come on, I know Sampson’s a convenient scapegoat here, but Mackey’s situation is more sad than sinister.

From reading the comments on this blog, you’d think Sampson was actively trying to fill his teams full of thugs. He can be vilified for plenty of things, but blaming him for Bud Mackey is, well, a stretch.

I feel bad for Bud. I hope he gets his act together.

Uh… how then would you explain the past weeks events with players throwing plants, not doing well in school basically the inmates running the jail….. This kid was right up Sactions alley in my opinion….

  5. Please. I’m no Sampson apologist, but his kids were all pretty well in line his first year, especially academically. It’s last year when the crap started hitting the fan.

There’s a difference between losing control of a team and actively trying to recruit thugs.

  6. Come on DD, the point is that Sampson recruited 3 of the 4 guys dismissed this year, and Mackey, who would be coming in next year if not for the drug and contempt charges. Do you see a freakin pattern here????? I mean Holman punched a ref in high school and only played a few games his senior year.

I didn’t say it was Sampson’s fault the guy was dealing drugs, cause that would be retarted. But how can you not blame him for bringing in players who’s character can be described as questionable at best?!!!

  7. And it was all Davis recruits his first year!!! Obviously!!! Get with the program DD!

Just look at the folks he got to play at IU.. where are they today and where will they be in 10 yrs? Holman? Californa Penal…..Ellis? Illinois Department of corrections…. just mark my words…

  9. Instead of praying for the kid (who obviously has some serious problems), IU fans choose to bash him and the coach who was willing to give him a chance.

  10. I feel for Mackey too, but you have to wonder if Kelvin did any homework during the recruiting process. When a college recruits, aren’t they supposed to look at grades, character, and other off-court issues. There should have been some red flags going up in Kelvin did his due dilligence.

  11. Just because he’s in jail doesn’t mean he can’t still play for Kentucky, does it? It fits with Wildcat tradition.
Seriously, this is a talented kid with serious issues. I hope that someday SI will have a story about how he turned his life around.

  12. Sampson sure had an eye for talent.

    Bad student……….Check.
    Bad attitude………Check.
    Disrespectful……..Check.
    Drug dealer……….Check.
    One man show………Check.

Sure you’ll fit right in at IU.

Thank God for Coach Crean. Taking out the garbage and putting the Hoosiers back on the map. Win or lose this year, I’ll be proud to be a Hoosier again.

Unfortunatey, this ALMOST became hoosier tradition. Maybe we thank Sampson for the cell-phone debacle?

  14. Bash……..bash…….bash…….brash……poor spelling……Bash.

Thought I would visit this article and I see exactly what I expected. All you “Holier than thou” posters need a hobby. This reader is moving on to more intelligent discussions.

  15. Whine……..whine……whine…….whine…..whine.

There is always someone like ww who actually feels sorry for a delinquent who has been given a gift and decides to piss it away. Bud Mackey is not a child, he is a young man who is very capable of making the right decisions, he just chooses not to. What a waste.
