The Altoona Curve, a Double-A team that plays in the Eastern League, is hosting a night to honor quitters, including former Indiana coach Bob Knight.
Knight, you probably recall, left his Texas Tech team as it finished out last season.
You’d think this promotion bizarre unless, like me, you spent most of your youth working at a minor league baseball stadium. These people will do anything to draw attention to their games. The stadium I worked at had a seemingly endless supply of mascots — a duck, a beaver, a turtle, a large baseball with legs and arms, etc. — and they played in a rock band together. You haven’t heard “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” until you’ve heard it from those guys. That Bucky Beaver can really rip on the guitar.
Anyway, this promotion is much better than, say, giving away those miniature bats. Those things are useless. Unless you’re an insane 5-year-old hell-bent on destruction. Then, you use it to hit the guy filling the ketchup, and that guy is me.
