Bassett, Ellis, Thomas and Holman all leaving

1:45 update: I just received confirmation from Indiana basketball spokesman J.D. Campbell that Bassett, Ellis, Thomas and Holman are indeed leaving IU. An announcement will be made in the next few minutes.

Indiana will announce this afternoon that Armon Bassett, Jamarcus Ellis, DeAndre Thomas and Eli Holman will not be back with the Hoosier basketball program next season, according to a report by Andy Katz of ESPN.

Bassett and Ellis were previously kicked off the team by interim coach Dan Dakich and their appeals to rejoin the team have been turned down, Katz reported.

The losses would leave IU with just three returning scholarship players (Jordan Crawford, Brandon McGee and Kyle Taber), along with incoming freshmen Tom Pritchard, Matt Roth and Nick Williams, as well as JUCO transfer Devon Dumes, and several walk-ons.

IU basketball spokesman J.D. Campbell said moments ago that he cannot confirm or deny the report.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.

  1. i will send a thank you card to coach crean. he needs all the support he can get right now.

  2. Probably too early to ask, but any idea why with Thomas and Bassett? The other two are pretty obvious.

  3. I heard directly from Armon Bassett, that he was unofficially back on the team. Why would Tom Crean lie to them and say that they are back on the team? And wasn’t Katz the one that said that Bennett had been approached?

  4. I really hope this is true. It’s time to clean house, build a good foundation and go forward. Yeah, these guys were pretty good, but you need more than basketball skills to play at Indiana or for that matter N. Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, etc. The more decisions Coach Crean makes, the more I like him. Each day we see what type of character of person it took to play for Sampson. Too say the least, I am not impressed. Coach Crean, The Hoosier Nation is behind you sir. Thank you for coming to Indiana.

Because maybe Tom Crean wasn’t the one that was lying.

Welcome to IU Coach! You’re doing a great job!
