When I spoke to Christian Watford today, he had to duck out of the dining room at P.F. Chang’s in Birmingham. The Watford’s had a table there for 18, including IU coach Tom Crean, Bennie Seltzer and Roshown McLeod.
Not surprisingly, I could hear Crean in the background.
Watford said he has basically known that he wanted to attend IU since the late August elite camp. He’s taken the last two weeks to think about the decision and wanted to be able to celebrate the decision with the coaching staff, which couldn’t go on visits until today (per NCAA rules.)
Watford said Indiana’s history and the chance to come in and play right away influenced him. He also thought Crean could help him become a better player, and that IU could be contenders for a national title more quickly than many think.
His father, Ernest, did say that the family would have to re-visit the commitment should IU receive an unexpectedly harsh punishment from the NCAA.
