Phillips done for year; Polk will miss MSU

Chris Phillips injures his knee against Ball State.

Indiana’s secondary has been decimated by injury.

Fifth-year senior Christopher Phillips, a senior and starter at conrnerback, is done for the year. He injured his knee trying to defend a 45-yard touchdown pass by Nate Davis on Saturday. Phillips attempted to jump to deflect the ball but never got off the ground; his knee buckled and he was helped off the field minutes later. Sources told the Herald-Times that night that trainers immediately feared ACL damage.

Bill Lynch, who held his weekly press conference today, did not say specifically what Phillips’ injury was but indicated he would not play the rest of the season. He also said Phillips did not seem to be a candidate for a medical redshirt, meaning his career is over.

Free safety Nick Polk also injured his knee on Saturday and missed much of the second half. His injury is expected to be more short-term but will keep him out of Saturday’s game against Michigan State at Memorial Stadium.

Richard Council, a 6-foot-1, 189 pound sophomore, is now listed as the starter at cornerback opposite Chris Adkins. Council was one of several players who eventually lost a spirited training camp battle for a starting spot.

Senior Joe Kleinsmith will take Polk’s spot and will be backed up by Brandon Mosley, according to Indiana’s most recent depth chart.

Strong safety Austin Thomas, who did not play in Indiana’s 42-20 loss to Ball State, is improving and could return to the field in time for Saturday. His presence would be welcomed; he’s an above-average run-stopper and the Spartans will bring Javon Ringer, one of the best backs in the country, to town.

  1. Maybe, but he’s certainly able to block punts and make tackles on special teams…come on, what’s up with this???

  2. Finch seems to have done well on special teams but he appears to be out of sync when at safety. Maybe the coaches feel he needs more time to adjust to the system.

  3. Finch is supposed to be a player!

We just got beat by the MAC at HOME by 20+!!

Put the kid in the game and let him work it out. How can it get any worse? Any other youngsters with promise-give them some time too.

Wanna motivate players? Show them the bench. BL’s gotta get a handle on this thing now, it’s headed the wrong way!

  4. UPDATE:

In Lynch’s weekly Big Ten teleconference earlier today, he acknowledged to the media that it is indeed an ACL injury.

“Christopher Phillips tore his ACL, so at this point he’s getting lined up for surgery,” he said.

  5. I’m just not understanding how a former kicker is getting the nod before Finch…(dang these anti-spam math equations are killing me, how am I suppose to know the square root of 412 off the top of my head!)

  6. It’s easy for everybody on here to go crazy wondering why Finch isn’t starting with all of the injuries at the safety position, but none of you are in the locker room and you don’t know what’s going on. Other than a couple of kick return plays, Finch hasn’t yet made any impact on defense when he HAS been in the game.

  7. Move Mitch Evans back. He started at slot against Murray St, but hardly played vs Ball. He did well when playing for Thomas last year.
