Van Treese headed to Louisville

Stephan Van Treese, once the hot name in IU recruiting circles, is off the board.

He verbally committed to Louisville, Scout.com reported Tuesday night.

Van Treese was once a top-100 prospect that was seen as a lock to join AAU teammates Jordan Hulls and Bobby Capobianco in Bloomington.

Tom Crean told Van Treese that IU’s coaching staff would watch him over the course of the summer. Key days during July, when Crean could be on the road sparingly, were spent, in part, watching Van Treese.

Ultimately, it does not look like IU ever re-offered (Kelvin Sampson did offer Van Treese) Van Treese. The Hoosiers now have Christian Watford, and Van Treese has found a home.

You could say it has worked out for both sides.

  1. I didn’t want Van Treese at all, he would be nothing but a waste of scholarship.

He’ll transfer to IU-SE in a couple of years

  2. Okay, I guess I’ve been a bit out of the loop. The article says IU ‘has Christian Watford.’ Did he commit to IU?? That would be a good thing! When did this happen, if it did indeed happen?

  3. Chris or Doug:

There are reports that IU received a verbal from big man Bawa Maniru. Is this report accurate and what is your take on this recruit?

  4. Eric, Watford committed a week ago.
I don’t think Bawa has committed, yet. But he will be at IU for the BSU game this Saturday. It could happen, then. He is also being pursued by Oklahoma and Louisville. But the Cards may drop out after having signed SVT.

  5. Slojoe,

Thanks, I was on vacation and away from the Internet last week. That’s a good commitment. We should be pretty good in ’09-10 and even better the following year. Give Crean 3-4 years and we’ll be competitive with anyone, I truly believe that.

  6. So did Van Treese get a schooly from Louisville? Is that the deal? I knew IU was discussing it with him but apparently never offered (clearly Watford is the better chice for us anyway).

  7. For whatever reason coach Crean didn’t make a strong push for SVT and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I would always welcome an Indiana kid but it has to be a good fit and for whatever reason I don’t believe coach Crean saw it that way. Best of luck to SVT.
