Dumes suspended indefinitely by Crean

Indiana junior guard Devan Dumes has been suspended indefinitely by Tom Crean for drawing a flagrant foul against Michigan State Saturday night.

Dumes was whistled for throwing an elbow at Spartans’ reserve center Tom Herzog’s shoulder (which was about as high as Dumes could reach) with two minutes remaining in the Hoosiers 75-47 loss. After reviewing the play on court side replay monitors, the officiating crew called a flagrant foul resulting in an automatic ejection.

Here is a copy of the release issued by IU:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean has suspended indefinitely junior guard Devan Dumes for his actions during Saturday’s game at Michigan State.

“After coming home and having the opportunity to review the game film, I believe that discipline is necessary and deserved in this matter,” said Crean.  “A line was crossed that was unacceptable.  However, Devan is one of ours and like with all of our players we want them to learn and understand what it takes to be successful.”

Dumes will not play when IU visits Minnesota on Tuesday night.

“I truly regret my actions and I will learn from this situation,” said Dumes.  “I apologize to everyone involved for doing something that is uncharacteristic of how I play the game.  I am looking forward to putting this behind me and being a better leader to my teammates.”

Dumes will continue to practice and travel with the team.

  1. This penalty is deserved and fair, not least because it wasn’t just ONE elbow that was thrown, it was THREE.

That said, this is the first time I’ve noticed Dumas playing thuggish ball. Hopefully he’ll learn from this and everyone involved can move on.

  2. Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean has suspended indefinitely junior guard Devan Dumes for his actions during Saturday’s game at Michigan State……….Dumes will continue to practice and travel with the team.

Can somebody explain why he would continue to practice and travel with the team when he has been ‘suspended indefinitely’?

  3. Because, as is common place with every player in every sport, even when you are suspended, you continue to practice and travel with the team.

  4. Dumes should have been ejected and suspended after the Ohio State game. He got away with a cheap shot during that game and there should be no place in Indiana Basketball for that kind of behavior.

  5. Really? Because I remember quite a few players who did similar things (Dane Fife, who bit a player and threw tons of elbows). Dumes deserved to be suspended, but there has been a lot of overreaction to this.

  6. “Thuggish” ball.. WTF does that even mean?? Is he singing 2Pac while running down the floor? Use basketball terms not racial slang…

  7. thank you Jimmy, thank you!! Well said! I remember Pat Knight picking a kid up and body slamming him for GOD sakes.
