Say it now — he’s just a freshman

When Darryl Baker almost single-handedly led Team Southern Indiana to a come-from-behind victory in the closing seconds Friday at the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville, it was easy for some in the crowd to forget one thing.

Baker is only 14 years old, and his teammates and opponents are all two years older.

Baker, who scored a game-high 24 points, is a 6-foot-1 point guard with incredible finishing skill. Down 54-49, he found a teammate in the corner for a 3; tipped an inbounds pass that went off the opponent’s hand and gave Baker the ball back; was fouled, missing the first free throw and making the second; and then picked up another loose inbounds pass and got off a finger roll that just rolled off the rim.

Baker, who will play at Jeffersonville, said he is not paying attention yet to recruiting.

“I just play ball,” said Baker, who did attend Indiana’s Elite Camp.

Baker did say Indiana, North Carolina and Connecticut were the schools, among others, that he would like to be recruited by.

  1. I suspect he is related to Tommy Baker (also from Jeffersonville) who played for IU for a short time during the Knight years.
