Bloomington South coach expects Carlino back

Bloomington South boys’ basketball coach J.R. Holmes said he has been told by the Carlino family that Matt will be back at South next season.

“They told me this doesn’t change his situation here,” Holmes said. “Until he moves, I assume he’ll be here. If he moves. Right now, they’re both telling me he’s not. This is their home.”

Matt Carlino decommitted from Indiana late Thursday and is no longer being recruited by the Hoosiers.

Holmes said he advised the Carlinos to speak with Crean about their concerns and not let it come out through the media or on the Internet.

“If he’s not real 100 percent sure in his mind, to voice those concerns to coach Crean,” Holmes said. “My understanding is that coach Crean was really good in the meeting. It’s a situation that worked out the best it can.”

Holmes encourages his players to not commit to a college until it does not matter who calls tomorrow. While he was not coaching Carlino when the junior committed to Indiana, he said Carlino is not sure who he wants to call.

“Who is going to call tomorrow you that you like better?” Holmes said. “He has no answer. … I just think, from my understanding, it’s part of being a kid. It still maybe IU at the end.”

Carlino averaged 13.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists this season for South, his first since moving from Gilbert, Ariz. last summer.

  1. Seemed like a nice player, saw him at almost every home game! Wish him luck in the future. Personally it seems that IU’s biggest need is a true pg or post player that can defend.

-sounds to me like the offer might not be there anymore….

  3. According to Korman, or at least his twitter, the schollie was not pulled and this was the Carlino’s choice. Sounds to me like a teen that doesn’t know what else is out there and would like to find out…

  4. Sorry, but the kid’s not good enough that we should keep a spot open for him. If he wants out, that’s fine, just don’t expect to have a spot later if he changes his mind.

  5. A lot of stuff going around about Butler, who knows if thats true but Fromm will be up there too.
