Mells leaving, Taylor too

An Indiana University news release this afternoon said Ashlee Mells “will not return” to the IU women’s basketball program next season.

As a sophomore Mells averaged 4.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 27 games, but she also was suspended three games at midseason for behavioral issues.

“We want to thank Ashlee for her contribution to our program and we wish her well in her future endeavors,” IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack said.

This doesn’t really come as a big surprise since Mells has had her clashes with the coaching staff over her two years in Bloomington. Her play as a freshman earned her the nickname “Wild Child,” and she often was turned to for an energy boost off the bench. But it was the inability to harness that energy at times that appeared to create a problem.

UPDATE
In addition to Ashlee Mells’ departure, IU has confirmed that 6-foot-5 signee Marissa Taylor of Chicago has asked for and been granted her release from her letter of intent. Taylor signed with the Hoosiers last fall. This leaves IU room to add some players in the spring signing period or continue to bank scholarships for what would be a very large 2011 recruiting class.

  1. well that sucks. She had some talent to be harnessed over the next few years.

Research project Jeremy, when was the last year the IU Women did NOT have a player leave the team?

  2. There is is; we are starting to see 4tards’s wisdom and warnings of transfers come to fruition already.

  3. I’ll have to do a further research, but I can tell you for sure that a player has left the team every year since 2005, Kathi Bennett’s final season.

  4. THIS BLOWS IS SHE GOING TO TRANSFER? CAN WE ACTUALLY KEEP A GROUP WITH OUT HAVING THEM LEAVE I FEEL THIS WONT BE THE LAST ONE WE HEAR OF B4 NEXT SEASON !

  5. Is something else going on here? Two in one day. Sounds like some troubles in the program. Without good players the program will not grow. May be some hidden problem that has not come out yet.

  6. hoosierladysupporter,
Just to be clear, the Taylor thing did not just happen yesterday, I just found out about it then. Also, Taylor did not play at all for her high school team this year, so her problems would appear greater than IU.

  7. I agree Jeremy I think MT not signing was a smart move for one she must have problems not even playing her senior season and number two we have Adujar,Chaplin,Jones I say we need to get some guards for the future we loose alot in 2011
