Hoosier prospect Darryl Baker at the Adidas May Classic

TEAM SCORE: 16 U Team Southern Indiana Red 68, Club Elite Storm 61

DARRYL BAKER: The Jeffersonville High School freshman guard had 28 points

BAKER SAID: “I drive to the basket a lot so I get fouled a lot, so I take my time to shoot my free throws.”

MY THOUGHTS: TSI Red won this game for one reason: Darryl Baker makes free throws. Post game stats in these tournaments are sketchy, but by my count and other counts I saw, he scored 16 of his 28 points at the line. He didn’t make many highlight reel plays, with the exception of a double-spin move in the lane that turned into a layup, but he was aggressively took the ball to the basket, found contact and got to the line time and time again. In crunch time, he was on, nailing his last 12 foul shots including several in the final minutes that clinched the game for TSI. He obviously needs to get stronger so he can finish with contact and turn his drives into and-ones instead of two free throws, but he still has three years of high school to learn how to do that.
