Hollowell says he may not commit until next year

The chatter going around that Jeremy Hollowell was looking to commit soon to either Ohio State or Indiana wasn’t just rumor. The Lawrence Central junior swingman said Monday that there was a time that he was close to pulling the trigger.

But not anymore.

“At one point I was about to,” Hollowell said. “But then I backed off it. I realize now I should wait, so I’m going to wait.”

How long?

“I’m not really focusing on it right now and just trying to get better, focusing on the season,” Hollowell said. “I think I’m going to take my time and wait until next year.”

Hollowell said that Indiana and Ohio State are not the only schools he’s considering. He’s also hearing from Purdue, Illinois, Xavier, Cincinnati, Iowa, Wake Forest, Florida, Oregon and Louisville.

But Indiana and Ohio State are obviously still among his favorites. Hollowell visited Ohio State on Sept. 11 for the Buckeyes’ football game against Miami. He was in Bloomington on Saturday for a brief unofficial visit, and he will make another unofficial on Oct. 2 for the IU-Michigan football game. He said this latest visit was brief. He went down with his mother, who met with several of Indiana’s academic staff.

Hollowell said Indiana coach Tom Crean has been using the rest of the 2012 class in Indiana as a recruiting tool. The Hoosiers already have a commitment from one in-state player in the class in Broad Ripple’s Ron Patterson, one of Hollowell’s close friends. They also have a commitment from Peter Jurkin, who is a native of Sudan and played high school basketball in North Carolina last season, but plays for the Indiana Elite summer travel team.

The Hoosiers are also recruiting several other in-state stars for the Class of 2012, including Park Tudor point guard Yogi Ferrell, Hamilton Southeastern guard Gary Harris, North Central guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and LaPorte Lumiere forward Hanner Perea.

“He was just talking about how good our class could be that could come that year,” Hollowell said. “He was talking about having the No. 1 recruiting class, things like that. Competing against those guys right now, we go at each other pretty hard. Imagine playing together on the same team. It would be a real cool experience to go to a school where you know a lot of players. Team chemistry would already be really good.”
