Students and fans gather outside Assembly Hall on Sept. 10, 2000 after Indiana fired Bob Knight. Jeremy Hogan | Herald-Times

  • In the final part of his series, Lynn Houser writes about how the decision to fire Bob Knight divided the IU family.
  • Not much changed for Indiana during the bye week, Dustin writes.
  • I reported on Twitter that the IU coaching staff was in LaPorte last night to watch Hanner Perea.

  1. The division in the IU family still exists. It’s really sad that some fans have not been able to unite in support for the current team and coach, and instead insist on finding a time machine back to the past.

How backwoods ignorant to you have to be to think that hiring Dane Fife, Steve Alford, or Pat Knight could fix everything?

  2. How backwoods ignorant do you have to be to not think Dane Fife should be an assistant on our staff right now?
How backwoods ignorant do you have to be to not think Steve Alford is a top tier coach? He finished in the top 3 for National Coach of the Year honors this past season.

  3. F#Q$%ing jackass Shon Greene. I knew it. For the second straight year, Yahoo screws me with their “player ratings.” Last year, it was Matt Forte and Steve Slaton; this year, it is Shon Greene and Michael Turner. Lesson: NEVER go with unproven running backs with “tremendous upside,” no matter how highly rated they are.

  4. Because there are better candidates than Dane Fife, maybe just maybe.

Some people need to get out of the ‘we need an IU guy here’ thing. Knight wasn’t an IU guy.

Then again it shows the pure ignorance of a small group of ‘fans’

  5. Better yet how ignorant do you have to be to not see that TC is the best fit for IU. He is building a program from nothing and it will be a top notch basketball program with-in the next 2 years. I say Indiana goes to elite 8 Minimum this year and wins a national championship by 2013. It is only a FOOL who can think Indiana will only come back with a former Hoosier on the sidelines. Go HOOSIERS and prove me right.

  6. Also, if Dane Fife is ever going to be a viable candidate for the IU job, wouldn’t you rather have him getting head coaching experience at a lower-level in-state school (like say, I don’t know, IPFW?) than as an assistant to a coach you hate?

And Husky, if you trusted Yahoo’s opinion that bringing in possibly the best RB over the past decade (Tomlinson) wouldn’t hurt Greene’s value, well that’s no one’s fault but your own.

  7. Please list six specific achievements Fife would have accomplished by this point in time if he had been hired this past Spring.

NCY candidate masquerading as a top tier coach with support from the sub-par conference schedule of the MW. His surrender is now turned into a joke. Serious material for Comedy Central.

  8. Last Sunday Dane gave a speach in Markle. He stated that he did interview, but was not offered the assitant coaching job at Indiana. He struggled with the question of being a head coach at IPFW or and assitant at IU. The easy road is IU, more money, more exposure, more money. At IPFW he has an opprotunity to make something out of nothing (i.e. North Manchester). he is a great guy and he has the right attitude for great success in the future, in either part of the state.
He also talked very highly of Tom Crean and the upcoming recruiting classes, very highly!
    Go IU!

  9. It’s sad that Lynn Houser felt the need to write an entire series on the Bob Knight firing. I’m sure next year he will come out with the same drivel. I think Lynn is just lazy and wanted something easy to write. These types of articles do not help the IU family at all and it’s getting old. At least 10 years old to be specific.

  10. IU would not have wasted a scholarship on Michel. Crean still probably would have found some foreign project to give it to, but still.

  11. Agreed. Lazy excuse for journalism. I’m sure they will get the same stuff in Tallahassee about Bobby Bowden until he is dead.

  12. I understand the 10 year anniversary angle, but don’t beat me up with it for 3 or 4 days in a row.

There isn’t anything new to say and nobody in the media or at large has said anything remotely interesting about this thing for years.

If Bob decides to come back, great. Otherwise: Time. To. Move. On.

  13. “How backwoods ignorant do you have to be to not think Dane Fife should be an assistant on our staff right now?”

You tell me – first, how you know that Dane Fife wanted to be an assistant on our staff in the first place? And second, how you know he would be better than McClain, who by several accounts is really helping in recruiting efforts.

“How backwoods ignorant do you have to be to not think Steve Alford is a top tier coach? He finished in the top 3 for National Coach of the Year honors this past season.”

Why don’t you ask the Iowa fans that question? They would have a definite opinion on that. Something to do with a lower winning percentage in the Big 10 than Mike Davis.

  14. Dane Fife wanted to be an assistant on our staff because he interviewed for the position and has said so.
Fife is turning a D1 program around from scratch, while McClain got ran out of town on his stint.
The only recruit McClain has brought in is Michel, and I would rather not have him.
Iowa fans are probably bitter since Alford left them because their administration was not willing to give the basketball program necessary resources, and that program has went way downhill since Coach Alford left.
Crean has a much lower winning percentage in Big10 than Mike Davis and Steve Alford. What is your point?

  15. Iowa has been absolutely horrible since Alford left. Not saying they were awesome when he was there but at least they were respectable.

  16. 4tickturds,

    Fife IPFW 64W 85L

McClain Wyoming 157W 115L (In Laramie)
    Coloraso 15 16 (Interim)
    JC 91 16

Might be Fife’s record as contrasted to McClain’s had something to do with SM getting the IU job. Apparently Dane has more improvement to do with that program.

  17. “Dane Fife wanted to be an assistant on our staff because he interviewed for the position and has said so.”

Where did it ever say that Fife interviewed for the position? His visit to IU was scheduled before the opening was available, and the rumor that he talked to Crean “for hours” on the phone was debunked. I did a Google search and cannot find a quote from him saying he interviewed, or that “he wanted the job.” You have a link?

“Crean has a much lower winning percentage in Big10 than Mike Davis and Steve Alford. What is your point?”

Did Alford have to field a completely new team from scratch with a lot of walk ons after Iowa was heavily penalized by the NCAA and virtually every player dismissed due to grades or drug use, or other problems? No.

  18. Not only do JB and 4tards always post consecutively and within minutes of each other but they also tend to use the same poor grammar.

    “got ran”
    “has went”

    Really?

  19. Chet-

“JB” is 4tards’ alternate posting name that he uses so that it looks like someone in the world besides Korman agrees with him.

I wouldn’t say he’s from Kentucky – let’s be nice to the folks down there and not insult them with such a suggestion.

Tards is a Fox news automaton. That says it all.

  20. I guess it is not only basketball that you guys have no clue about.
I have said it before (has been verified) and I will say it again. I only post under 4guards formerly known as stevealford.
I will say that there are others who also post under 4guards at times.
