Ferrell verbally commits

By the time Wednesday night arrived, there wasn’t a lot of suspense to Yogi Ferrell’s recruitment process. And the fact that Indiana coach Tom Crean was in attendance for Park Tudor’s season opener and Ferrell’s announcement made it even more obvious what Ferrell was going to say.

But the Park Tudor point guard still got a rousing ovation when he made his commitment to Indiana official.

“Right now in front of my family the Park Tudor family who have all been my biggest supporters,” Ferrell said, “I want to verbally commit to play my college basketball for coach Tom Crean at Indiana.”

Ferrell is the latest in an astounding string of commitments Crean has landed since August when 7-foot center Peter Jurkin of United Faith Christian Academy in North Carolina made his decision. Jurkin was followed by Broad Ripple guard Ron Patterson, then Fort Wayne Luers freshman guard James Blackmon, Jr. and Tech freshman forward Trey Lyles. Crean then landed two recruits in the top 20 of their respective classes in LaLumiere forward Hanner Perea and Washington High School forward Cody Zeller. Zeller’s commitment sped up the recruiting process of Ferrell, who was an AAU teammate of Zeller’s this summer.

Ferrell, the No. 17 recruit in the Class of 2012, was also considering Butler, Florida, Wake Forest and Virginia, though all signs in recent weeks showed that he was a virtual lock to come to Indiana. Along with those of Perea, Patterson and Jurkin, Ferrell’s commitment promises to make Indiana’s Class of 2012 one of the best in the country.
