IU women sign two

The Indiana women’s basketball team announced the signing of two players Tuesday for the recruiting class of 2011.

As previously reported, Necole Sterling, a 5-foot-11 wing from Leesburg, Va., signed with the Hoosiers. She is in her first season at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Va., after transferring from Heritage High School, where she averaged 15 points and six rebounds a game as a sophomore, before missing most of her junior year with an injury. She is ranked the No. 41 wing in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz.

The other signee is the result of the Hoosiers’ newfound Latvian connection, aided by first-year assistant coach Nate Altenhofen. Junior college forward Linda Rubene is a native of Gukbene, Latvia, and played for the Latvia U20 national team this past summer at the European Championships. The 6-foot-3 Rubene averaged 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds last year at Iowa Western Community College, leading the team in 3-point shooting at 46.5 percent (33-of-71).

Here’s a link to a google-translated Latvian internet page announcing Rubene’s signing with Indiana. It does make for some entertaining reading, despite a lack of any real info on Rubene.
