R.J. Curington: “It was pretty awesome.”

R.J. Curington doesn’t play his high school basketall in Indiana, but he grew up in the state, so he understands it.

So when the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from the famous Oak Hill Academy in Virginia took his unofficial visit to Bloomington on Friday, he said he was hoping to see some of the “Hoosier Hysteria,” he’d always heard about.

“Man, did I see it,” the Dyer native said. “It was pretty awesome.”

It started at Assembly Hall and Cook Hall, where Curington was impressed with the championship banners and the homages to former players. It continued when he went out to eat and fans were telling him he should be a Hoosier.

“We got to go to the campus to where everything comes alive,” he said. “We went to go eat, and the highlight was there were a bunch of the students there who knew who I was. They were saying, ‘ Come to IU, Come to IU,’ Then the owner of the shop tried to convince me to get over there and play for them. … It was a very impressive visit.”

Curington said he’s still early in the process. Rivals.com doesn’t list an actual scholarship offer for him anywhere yet, but he has interest from powers such as Florida, Georgetown, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. He said he has taken visits to North Carolina, Virginia and Northwestern so far. He’s in the process of planning visits to Tennessee, Stanford and Harvard.

“Right now I’m kind of keeping it wide open,” Curington said. “But IU really impressed me today.”

  1. Coach Crean continues to build momentum. Any of the kids now considering IU would be great additions and keep things rolling. The only thing that would make it better is if a few more talented bigs would start leaning toward IU.

  2. It’s not often you see IU, Purdue, Michigan State, OSU, or Wisconsin on the same list as Harvard either. Quite an eclectic one. Are we going to need another SG when he comes in?
