Indiana makes tournament as No. 4 seed in the South Region

Indiana was seeded No. 4 in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers will play No. 13 seed New Mexico State in the first round in Portland, Ore. No. 5 seed Wichita State and No. 12 seed Virginia Commonwealth are the other game in the bracket. Overall No. 1 seed Kentucky is the No. 1 team in the South. No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Baylor are the other top seeds.

Lots, lots more to come of course.

  1. I couldn’t find a ‘sure’ time, but I’m thinking it will be 5:00? Hopefully, the team can travel early enough to get themselves adjusted to the time change. Nice to have the welcome from Oregon… Go Hoosiers!

  2. Once. Again IU gets a far location. I think we get the shaft because the committee knows we’ll travel regardless how faraway they send us.

  3. You see NM State roster? one player 7’5. 2 are 6’11 and 2 are 6’10. 5 from Canada 2 from France and 1 from S. Africa

  4. McKimes is a high school teammate of Eli Holman- from Richmond,CA. He’s tough, definitely not a student athlete, and has had similar problems as Holman. But he’s a Charles barkley like rebounder. The only guy on IU’s team that could him is Oladipo. The rest of the team I don’t know. Ask Alford he played them twice.

  5. Alford lost to them once and demolished them the next.

New Mexico State is lucky. Their players may be mysteries to many of you now but you can be sure Tom Crean will make a star out of at least one of them during this encounter. Tom Crean is one heck of a coach!

  6. I just hope we don’t get a 10pm est start. Drives me crazy when the NCAA matches a team from the eastern zone against a western team at a time when biological clocks are going to slow.

  7. Without doing any research I’m guessing the Hoosiers are the only team to beat two of the number 1 seeds.

  8. Gottleib picks Wichita State to beat us in the second round. Crazy. They have one win over a halfway decent team, UNLV, and that’s not saying much. They’ve played NOBODY and have losses to said nobodies.

  9. I was born and raised in Bloomington and have lived in Portland for the past 15 years. I am THRILLED that the game is here, although I understand why most Hoosiers won’t be as excited as I am. I’m trying to figure out when the game will be so that I can try to get some tickets.

The Rose Garden is a big arena, but I’ve sat up in the nose bleeds during Blazer games and you can see what’s going on. Come on out and cheer on our team! Portland is a beautiful city with lots to do if you stay through the Saturday games as well.

  10. Ron – what roster are you looking at? The ESPN roster isn’t showing anything close to the size you listed…

I’m seeing 6’11”, 6’10”, 6’10” that combine for about 20 pts & 10 reb, and then some medium sized guys. Only one of the 3 bigs seems very effective.

My concern is McKines guy, looking at his stats and his size he seems to be similar to Draymond Green – who we really struggled to match up with. He made 50 3-ptrs, shoots 76% from the FT line and obviously is a load at 6’6″ 230…

Glad to see that they are missing their best guard. Appears the Kabongo kid (Myck’s brother) Transferred at the end of the first semester and they are fairly thin in the backcourt.

  11. Chet your limping logic is absolutely exhilarating. Dude, do some research if you don’t want to be the laffy-ing stock of Hoosier Scoop (not that you’re not close to that already). The main reason for UNM losing the first game wasn’t a Rob Wilson type of game from anyone of the Aggies. It was the abysmal performance of Drew Gordon and Kendal Williams (not that these names tell you anything) who went 0-13 from the field. A Christian Watford kind of day if you know what I mean. Otherwise New Mexico State was a normal team.

But listen: Alford is not Tom Crean. Tom Crean will find a way because he is a heck of a coach. And then he will tweet about it: tweet! tweet! I am still an atheist, thank God. #luisbunuel

  12. What sucks for me is I REALLY respect Gotlieb. There are certainly times I disagree with him, but overall he is a realist and very thorough…

I hate to see him pick against us.

If Colin Cowherd picks against us (something I doubt he’ll delve into) then I’m afraid we’re doomed.

Two of the most rational guys in sports. I’m more scared of them than NMST.

  13. ^ You still have trouble counting to four geOFF?

You have your own little myopic point of view that’s so unique and cute. You remind me of Husky Tom.

  14. Geoff. Sam Bhullar, freshman per school website.

One guy on ESPN picking NM for final four. Another says IU and Baylor both have the potential to end up at the final four.

  15. Geoff — I think we agree! After learning from Jobawa’s post, I see that two of NM’s players shot poorly in a game against NMST, which means they are soft. Or have no heart, or maybe don’t want it bad enough. Either way it is good news for IU, because it surely means that NMST can’t beat a hard team.

But wait, are we a hard team? It seems like we recently lost to Wisconsin, and I remember hearing that made us soft. Geoff, help me out. — are we harder or softer than NMST? It’s all so confusing…

  16. Cowherd barely touches college basketball and admits he doesn’t follow it. I’ve never been impressed with Gottleib. I noticed that Lamar is the overall lowest seed in the tourney.

IU and Baylor have shown they can beat top teams, with the Hoosiers beating two number 1 seeds. The next top 5 team New Mexico beats will be their first.

  17. Go West young Hoosiers and make some noise! Wichita State was going to be my upset team until they landed next to IU. Can the NCAA just go ahead and give kentuckys opponents an automatic pass since they will be stripped from history next year anyway?

  18. Why didn’t IU show they can beat top seeded teams when they played Rob Wilson’s team? (I am not asking why Tom Crean’s team could not beat Nebraska because Nebraska is not a top team. Chuckle.)

  19. Bhullar must be red shirting, because he isn’t playing in any games and hasn’t accumulated any stats this season…

  20. I wouldn’t worry too much about New Mexico State. Comes from a third tier conference (a Pac-12 of sorts) with only one other team in the NCAA tournament: Malik Story‘s Nevada.

  21. ^ Turns out Nevada actually didn’t make it. Sorry. It looks like they didn’t have a single good W on their resume…

  22. I think we have a fair draw. I wouldn’t have wanted to play Davidson & Wisc. beat us twice to get the weakest 13 seed in Montana. Wichita St. Is a formidable #5 but again, we didn’t earn a #3 or the best #4 seed. From here it boils down to who plays the best & staying out of foul trouble.

  23. I beat Gotleib’s bracket last year.

    And Seth’s.

Gotleib has almost the entire Big Ten losing the first game/weekend.

  24. Hey, I think you should respect every opponent. I certainly hope we don’t lose to a team with such an unimpressive resume. A team that would not have made the NCAA if they hadn’t won the WAC tourney.

Here are a couple relevant pieces of info:

    1) NMST is 1-6 against the RPI top 100
    2) Their only win was against Alford’s Lobos in the 2nd game of the year
    3) they were only 3-7 against the RPI top 150
    4) they played 25 games against teams ranked 150 or worse…

God I hope we don’t lose to them.

  25. I like our draw for the teams in the region with us, as it should be good for IU. Not impressed with the location all the way NW. pUKe is in for a tussle no matter who get the 2nd and 3rd game. I agree with Geoff about Missouri. I’ve seen Mizzou play several times and they are more than a handful. Spartans and Tigers would be a dandy. No matter how many Hoosiers are on top of their game, one of them has to be CW. He has to overachieve for this tournament to be successful for IU.

  26. Gottlieb has us losing to NMSU, not Wichita State in the second round. Glad he has all of the Big Ten losing before the Sweet 16. That means all 4 brackets will feature Big Ten teams in the Final Four.

  27. I was amazed watching all the “experts” yesterday predicting the Big Ten would be HORRIBLE in The Dance after saying ALL SEASON the Big Ten was the best conference….by FAR.

  28. Good points Chet and Laffy.

I should have corrected myself earlier. Gottlieb had us losing in the “second” round to NMSU, not in the “third” round to Wichita State. Does anyone else find the “second” and “third” round jargon incredibly annoying? Man I wish we were back in 2010 again where the first round was the round of 64.
