Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde picks IU to win the Big Ten Tourney

In his column Forde Minutes, Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde made picks in every conference tournament remaining. And in the Big Ten, Forde has jumped on Indiana’s bandwagon as favorites for the tournament title, which would be the Hoosiers’ first-ever.

“The Hoosiers have been a sensational home team this season, beating Kentucky, Ohio State and Michigan State in Bloomington. If their fans can transform Bankers Life Fieldhouse (among the worst names ever) into Assembly Hall North, that will help a team that comes in on a solid four-game roll.”

  1. That’s what i’m talkin about Pat- your leaving ESPN gets better every g.d. day

  2. For what it is worth, Jim Nantz has IU in his Final Four. pUKe is not. I believe it was IU, NC, Syracuse and Kansas. The Heels were his pick to win it all. Nice to see IU becoming relevant again in the national media.
I would not be surprised to see this team make a deep run in the NCAA tourney. I also won’t be surprised if they trip up in the first round. Hoping for the former.

  3. I noticed that too Publico, plus–how is losing at Iowa a “bad loss”? 8-10 in the big ten, the best condference in the country?? Granted, it’s not as good loss, but it ain’t thatbad. Losing at ho,me to Minnesota is worse….anyway, I just wanted to point out that VJ has been ALMOST effective in his new role. I thought he might be better off the bench & he has been. I still will be all smiles when he’s gone…(thinking of the happy times he created, ofcourse!) It still bothers me that CTC needed to see the team w/out VJ in order to realize that he NEEDED TO SEE THE TEAM W/OUT VJ!! Anyhoo, I do think we may make a good run the big ten tourney, it will not be the homecourt advantage that Forde speaks of though, unfortunately. The crowd may be primarilty Hoosier red, but it won’t create an Assembly Hall type of advantage. Never has before, anyway.

  4. For some reason I can’t see the ‘tripping’ scenario, especially if we win a few B10 tourney games and readjust to the neutral court. I see a Sweet Sixteen as a real possibility.

As for for the Iowa game; It simply isn’t a bad loss, nor was it when it happened. I don’t care who on this blog says so or talks of “high but reasonable” expectations. Maybe we looked lethargic, but Iowa is not a pushover; any team that beats Wisconsin twice and beats Michigan by 16 is not half bad. They are just inconsistent.

  5. Agree with chris that Bankers Life Fieldhouse won’t be near what Assembly Hall is like. But Forde is otherwise correct – IU wins the tournament. Go IU!!!

  6. Losses to teams outside of top 100 are considered “bad” and Iowa’s RPI was 130. IMO, Iowa is pretty dang good but based on all the metrics, they weren’t top 100 so IU gets tagged with a “bad” loss.

  7. A bit off-topic…Then again, maybe not so much since Lamar was brought up on the blog a couple weeks ago.

    Lamar 76, Northwestern St. 69

    March 7, 2012

KATY, Texas (AP) – Mike James scored 21 points and Lamar closed the game with a 15-4 run to overtake Northwestern State 76-69 in the Southland Conference tournament quarterfinals Wednesday.

Anthony Miles added 16 points, Charlie Harper 14 and Devon Lamb 12 for the third-seeded Cardinals (21-11), who will take a four-game winning streak into the semifinals Thursday night against second-seeded Stephen F. Austin.

Stan Brown grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Lamar’s 46-32 edge on the boards.

William Mosley’s 22 points and nine rebounds paced the sixth-seeded Demons (16-16). Louis Ellis scored 15 points and Shamir Davis 12.

The Cardinals led 47-35 before the Demons reeled off a 17-1 run to forge a 52-48 advantage with 8:43 to go.

Lamar was still down 65-61 with 3:11 left before its furious finish.

The Cardinals are making their first trip to the conference tournament since the 2007-08 season.

Lamar has won four straight since Pat Knight’s tirade. Guess his players sorta stepped up. Interesting.

  8. It is just so unfair and disappointing that a drunken, inept coach from such an entitled backround could ever be given credit for his team being 21-11. Just a damn travesty. Where the hell is Miles Brand when you really need him?
