Live at Sembower Field: Georgia Southern at Indiana

End of the Seventh: Chris Beck is still in this one and cruising. He went 1-2-3 in the seventh, and Georgia Southern is down just 4-2 heading into the eighth.

————————————————————————————————————————-

Middle of the Seventh: Joey DeNato gave up a single and a double to start the seventh. He then got a shallow fly to right field and left with his shutout in tact, but both inherited runners scored when Georgia Southern second baseman Tyler Avera hit a shallow chopper toward the mound. Reliever Ryan Halstead came up and tried to get catcher Chase Griffin going for home. Halstead missed, however, threw the ball to the backstop allowing two runners to score. He escaped without further damage, but IU’s lead was cut t 4-2.

——————————————————————————————————————

End of the Sixth: Will Nolden managed a one out single to left and a stolen base, but Chris Beck retired the other three batters he faced. IU still leads 4-0.

———————————————————————————————————-

Middle of the Sixth: Joey DeNato walked a batter to start the inning, but picked him off and ended up facing the minimum. IU leads 4-0.

———————————————————————————————————–

End of the Fifth: Indiana first baseman Sam Travis ripped a two-out single to keep the inning alive and IU designated hitter ripped a triple down the right field line to score him to make it 4-0. IU.

Middle of the Fifth: Joey DeNato is hitting a major groove at this point. He struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 inning and has eight K’s in five shutout innings. IU leads 3-0.

————————————————————————————————————————-

End of the Fourth: Chris Beck struck out three straight Indiana hitters to get out of the fourth. Hoosiers still lead 3-0.

—————————————————————————————————

Middle of the Fourth: Joey DeNato gave up two singles in the fourth but struck out two and now has six K’s today. Indiana leads 3-0.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

End of the Third: Indiana catcher Kyle Schwarber hit a high pop up to center field that fell in for a double and then scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Dillon Dooney to make it 3-0 Indiana.

—————————————————————————————————————————-

Middle of the Third: Joey DeNato retired Georgia Southern 1-2-3 in the third. He has four strikeouts through three. Indiana leads 2-0.

—————————————————————————————————————–

End of the Second: Indiana right fielder Chris Sujka and second baseman Dustin DeMuth hit singles in the second, but were stranded. IU still leads 2-0.

—————————————————————————–

Middle of the Second: Georgia Southern got a base runner in the second in on a very strange play. Right fielder Stryker Brown hit what sounded and looked off the bat like a hard liner back at IU’s Joey DeNato. However, the ball seemed to slow in mid air. DeNato awkwardly flipped his right arm out to try to glove it but was unsuccessful. However, GSU second baseman Tyler Avera grounded to a 3-6-3- double play to end the inning. 2-0 Indiana.

—————————————————————————————–

End of the First: Sam Travis finally broke out. After an 0-for-16 slump, Travis hit a first-pitch fastball from Chris Beck well over the center field wall for a two-run homer to make it 2-0 Indiana.

——————————————————————————————————————–

Middle of the First: Indiana’s Joey DeNato surrendered a two-out single, but he also struck out two batters in a scoreless first.

Wasn’t going to come to this one, but Georgia Southern is pitching a likely first-round draft choice in Chris Beck against Indiana ace Joey DeNato, which means this game should very much not be 21-4.
