The Anya Connection: IU soccer update

I haven’t had much time the last couple of months to update IU men’s soccer recruiting, but there has been activity on that front.

In May, topdrawsoccer.com reported the commitment of Dematha Catholic (Md.) forward Sean Cowdrey to the Indiana recruiting class of 2013. But as it turns out, they were actually beaten to the punch by top 20 2013 basketball recruiting target BeeJay Anya, who on April 12th tweeted: “Lol my brother Sean committed to Indiana though? For soccer lol I’m never gonna hear the end of this from him and Victor lol”

Dematha is also the alma mater of current Hoosier basketball player Victor Oladipo, but Cowdrey told topdrawersoccer.com that IU product and New England Revolution standout Kevin Alston — his neighbor — was largely influential in the decision.

Also according to topdrawersoccer.com, midfielder Billy McConnell, the nation’s 44th-ranked player in the class of 2013, also committed to the Hoosiers in April.

Cowdrey and McConnell join brothers Tanner and Tommy Thompson, as well as goalkeeper Colin Webb as IU verbal commits for 2013.

  1. That’s what I think sometimes, but why is he the #1 ranked center in the 2013 class by espn?

CTC would have to work with him and by the time his Jr. Year rolls around he will be a very good player.

  2. Not impressed? Don’t need him? What are you basing this on? Some youtube videos? Come on now.. This is the top rated center in the class. He’s a monster on the boards and an excellent shot blocker. How could you possibly not want him?

  3. Debbie: come on now. You may want to justify your “interesting” statement about Beejay. Why are you not impressed? Who would be a better recruit for that position from that class? Don’t need him? That statement’s way out there. Please explain.

  4. Yeah, it seems as if all signs are pointing in the direction of indiana for anya. He doesnt live close, but indiana might feel like the most home for him.

  5. I do NOT agree with Debbie, but if I were making a case for her it would be all the extremely unimpressive stat lines he’s been putting up on the AAU circuit this summer and on the U17 team.

(although easy counters to those arguments would be that AAU favors guards and wings, and not big men that aren’t particularly fond of running the break. And hey, HE MADE the USA U17 team and helped them win FIBA gold…)

  6. The most important thing to remember is a year ago we would not had a shot at a kid like this if he had family on the team and his dad was a coach! He is a good player with a strong upside. Everyone keeps saying he is a lock with Stan Robinson in the fold as well as coach Johnson. Don’t believe it! He likes being the main man and with the current players on the team and the ones coming he will have to playup all the time to get time! Having him would be great but we continue to recruit bigs for this class which tells me he is not in or we have a scholarship no one knows about. All sites he is on do not list I.U. in his top five!Does anyone know the deal with J. Lyle? We seem to have gone in a different direction. Is he headed to Louisville?
