IU women’s recruit Muensterman wins state title

TERRE HAUTE — There are three common threads that Curt Miller seeks in his recruits:

  • High character
  • Scoring ability
  • History of winning

Maura Muensterman built on at least one of those facets Saturday afternoon.

The 2014 commit helped Evansville Mater Dei to its second consecutive IHSAA Class 2A state title in a 62-42 victory over Eastern (Greentown) at the Hulman Center.

Muesnterman scored eight points, dished nine assists (three turnovers) and and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. She shot only 3-for-15 from the field and struggled to find her scoring game early, but Muensterman is more than a one-dimensional player. She made several crisp passes through tight spaces and had six of her nine assists by halftime, when Mater Dei led 35-14.

Muensterman is regarded as perhaps the best prospect in the state for the 2014 class. She made a verbal commitment to Indiana in early February.

“Indiana has a great coaching staff, the campus is beautiful, they have the academics I need and it was just all-around great,” Muensterman said. “The people there seem amazing, so when I walked in there for my visit I felt completely comfortable. It was a great atmosphere.”

Muensterman entered the tournament averaging team bests in points (23.2 per game), 3-point efficiency (48 percent) and assists (9.0). She is the fourth prospect to commit to the 2014 class, joining Michigan wing Jessica Walter, Ohio forward Amanda Cahill and highly-touted Illinois point guard Tyra Buss.

I’ll have more on Muensterman and Indiana’s upcoming recruiting classes this week.

  1. Mike, I was hoping that either you or Jeremy would be posting an article on this site in the near future of the incoming women’s class and what they have done this year. I am very anxious to see this since I live in Kokomo and refuse to subscribe to the Herald-Times online (fixed income). The only way I am able to keep up with women’s basketball is by reading it on this website. I am a women’s season ticket holder and drive the 200 mile round trip for games as often as possible. Please keep us women’s fans as up to date as possible, thanks.
