Michigan at Indiana, Game 2

Top 9th: Scott Effross retired three straight in the ninth to get the save and clinch IU’s 9-3 win. The Hoosiers improve to 33-8 overall, 10-4 in the Big Ten.

Bottom 8th: Indiana loaded the bases with no one out to start the eighth, but the Hoosiers stranged all of those runners. Still, IU leads 9-3 going into the ninth.


Top 8th: Michigan right fielder Michael O’Neill came through with a two-out double, but that was the only base runner in the eighth. Indiana leads 9-3 and Michigan is down to three outs.


Bottom 7th: Justin Cureton drew a one-out walk and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber singled, but Michigan retired the next two batters. IU still leads 9-3.


Top 7th: Scott Effross induced three straight flyouts in the seventh and escaped quickly. IU still leads 9-3.


Bottom 6th: IU third baseman Dustin DeMuth drew a one-out walk but was caught trying to steal second base. Casey Smith drew a walk but was stranded. IU still leads 9-3.


Top 6th: Michigan scored a third run on a fielding error by IU second baseman Nick Ramos in the sixth, but Iu catcher Chad Clark threw out a runner at third trying to steal. IU’s Kyle Hart came out for Scott Effross in the inning. IU still leads 9-3.


Bottom 5th: Indiana first baseman Sam Travis ripped a two-out double, but the Hoosiers didn’t get another run in the fifth. Indiana still leads 9-2.


Top 5th: After a rocky fourth, Kyle Hart cruised through another 1-2-3 inning, picking up his second strikeout of the game. IU leads 9-2.


Bottom 4th: Indiana second baseman Nick Ramos already has four RBI in this game. He had a chance for two more, but struck out with runners on second and third in the fourth to end the inning. Indiana still leads 9-2.


Top 4th: Michigan got a second run on the board in the fourth with an RBI single by designated hitter Kevin White. IU still leads 9-2.


Bottom 3rd: Indiana blew up for six runs in the third, driving Michigan starter Evan Hill out of the game. Singles by first baseman Sam Travis, left fielder Scott Donley and third baseman Dustin DeMuth loaded the bases with one out. Right fielder Casey Smith drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. Catcher Chad Clark then ripped a single up the middle to score two runs and second baseman Nick Ramos ripped a double down the left field line to bring in two more. Travis later added another RBI single and the Hoosiers lead 9-1.


Top 3rd: Kyle Hart has retired nine straight since walking Patrick Biondi in the first. Michigan went down 1-2-3 in the third. IU leads 3-1.


Bottom 2nd: A wild inning by Michigan lefty Evan Hill led to a big inning for the Hoosiers. Hill walked Scott Donley and Michael Basil to start the inning. Third baseman Dustin DeMuth dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line and reached to load the bases. Right fielder Casey Smith flew out to left, but that scored Donley. Chad Clark drew a walk, then second baseman Nick Ramos ripped a single to left to score Basil and DeMuth. IU took a 3-1 lead.


Top 2nd: Kyle Hart retired Michigan’s hitters 1-2-3 in the second. Michigan still up 1-0.


Bottom 1st: Michigan left-hander Evan Hill retired the Hoosiers 1-2-3 in the first. Michigan leads 1-0.


Top 1st: Patrick Biondi is arguably the most dangerous leadoff man in the Big Ten and he just showed why. The Michigan center fielder effectively produced a run by himself in the first. He drew a six-pitch walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a groudnout by right fielder Michael O’Neill. Michigan leads 1-0 after a half inning.


Indiana and Michigan are about to start the second game of their series. Lineups follow.
