IU women vs. Virginia Tech

FINAL: Indiana 71, Virginia Tech 65. Larryn Brooks led the Hoosiers with 37 points, setting the program record for most points scored by a freshman. She played all 40 minutes.

Gerardot has had a night to forget, but she’s producing when it matters for IU. 1st FG came on and-1 w/1:38 to go, missed the free throw but got a big offensive rebound then jumped on a loose ball.

Under-4: Indiana 61, Virginia Tech 54. IU’s defense hasn’t been present all night, but it has when the Hoosiers have needed it most.

Under-8: Indiana 55, Virginia Tech 47. Hoosiers lead cut to single digits for the first time since the 1:04 mark of the first half.

Under-12: Indiana 50, Virginia Tech 33. Larryn Brooks, having another great night, is perfect from the field in the second half. Simone Delocah takes IU into the timeout with a big block under the basket.

Under-16: Indiana 47, Virginia Tech 31. Hoosiers on a 12-6 run to start the second half. Hokies really struggling out of the locker room. Virginia Tech with four turnovers in first four minutes, including a steal by Gerardot, who dished to Brooks for an easy layup just before the break.

HALFTIME: Remarkable 14-0 run by Indiana to close the half. Hoosiers lead the Hokies, 35-25, at the break. Larryn Brooks leads Indiana with 17. Brooks’ 3 with 1:04 to go made it 33-25 and got the crowd going, but this place went crazy when Kaila Hulls took a charge on the other end. Virginia Tech out-rebounding Indiana, 30-23. Both teams shooting right around 30 percent.

Under-4: Virginia Tech 25, Indiana 24. Larryn Brooks hits a 3 from the wing to bring IU within 1. Brooks has 10 so far. Hoosiers shooting only 26 percent (8-of-30).

Under-8: Virginia Tech 21, Indiana 17. Hoosiers get back with a 3 from Leikem and a 3pt play by Deloach. Hokies, however, still in control. The Hokies have the better inside game and, at least right now, the Hoosiers are trying to pack it inside, which is giving Virginia Tech some open looks from the perimeter. Lucky for IU, Virginia Tech has hit only one of its eight 3-ball attempts. The big problem is that IU is missing long shots, which is giving VT some quick transition buckets. Tech leads 8-0 on the fastbreak.

Under-12: Va.Tech 17, Indiana 11 Curt Miller calls 2 timeouts within last 30 seconds. Hoosiers forcing passes, struggling with the Hokies’ defensive athleticism.

Under-16: Indiana 7, Virginia Tech 4. Hoosiers take lead on FTs from Gassion and a pretty hook from Chaplin. Both teams only 2-of-8 from the field so far.

PREGAME: It’s the women’s turn in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, as the Hoosiers host Virginia Tech tonight at Assembly Hall. A win tonight would extend Indiana’s season-opening winning streak to eight games — the first time IU has won its first eight since the 1994-95 season.

Tonight marks the first meeting between the two programs. Much like the Hoosiers, the Hokies can also score. Virginia Tech averages 71.9 points per game through their first seven. From pregame warmups, it looks like Indiana will have reserve point guard Nicole Bell available tonight after she sat out Sunday’s game while recovering from a concussion suffered last week. I’ll have in-game updates here and on Twitter, where you can find me @BowieMike.

Virginia Tech lineup: Panousis, Tellier, Young, Ugoka, Campbell.
Indiana lineup: Larryn Brooks, Taylor Agler, Alexis Gassion, Tabitha Gerardot, Sasha Chaplin.
