Morehead State at Indiana, Game 2

FINAL: Indiana 11, Morehead State 3. Hoosiers have now won nine in a row. Kyle Schwarber, Dustin DeMuth, Brad Hartong, Will Nolden and Scott Donley each had 2 hits. Schwarber, Hartong and Tim O’Conner recorded 2 RBIs. Christian Morris picks up the win to even his record at 2-2. Belcher threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 runs.

Bottom 8th: I hesitate to call them insurance runs because this game has been pretty much over since the second inning, but Indiana tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth. Chad Clark started the late-game rally with a double down the right field line and scored moments later on Austin Cangelosi’s single through middle. Kyle Schwarber followed with a double to the centerfield wall, scoring Cangelosi. Schwarber’s liner initially fooled Morehead centerfielder Clayton Meyer, who came in on the ball before watching it sail over his head.

Bottom 7th: Indiana adds another in the seventh. Luke Cureton, batting for Scott Donley, reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on another perfect hit-and-run off the bat of Dustin DeMuth. He came in to score moments later when Morehead couldn’t turn a double play with one out. By the way, today’s announced crowd of 3,101 is a new regular season record at Bart Kaufman Field.

Top 6th: Christian Morris gets into a bit of jam and leaves the game with two outs. Moments earlier, the Hoosiers had a chance to get out of the inning when Chad Clark fielded a tough hopper behind the mound. But his throw to first base was high, pulling Sam Travis off the bag and putting a pair of runners on. Morris hit the next batter and was pulled for freshman sidearmer Thomas Belcher. The right-hander came in and needed only four pitches to strike out Alan Mocahbee to get out of the jam.

Bottom 5th: Brad Hartong led off the inning with a double to left field and moved over to third on Chad Clark’s grounder to the right side. A two-out pitch got away from Morehead catcher Chris Robinson, but didn’t go far enough. Hartong appeared to misjudge it and took off before being tagged out easily at the plate. Inning over.

Top 5th: Christian Morris has allowed baserunners in each inning, but has minimized potential damage. He got a little help in the fifth when Sam Travis snagged a one-out liner at first base and double up Robby Spencer to escape the inning. Morris has allowed six hits, with two walks, a hit by pitch and a strikeout. He’s managing and that’s all IU needs right now.

Bottom 4th: IU led off with the heart of its order, but couldn’t get anything going. Schwarber took a curve for strike 3. Travis grounded out to third. Donley recorded an infield single, but DeMuth flied out to right field to end the inning.

Bottom 2nd: Indiana plates eight runs in a big second inning that was helped along by a couple Morehead State errors. It all started with a double off the left field wall by Dustin DeMuth, who scored on a perfectly executed hit-and-run on Will Nolden’s single through the left side. The Hoosiers tied it at 3-3 on a two-run single to left from Tim O’Conner. And then the errors arrived. The initial gaffe came on a grounder to third base. Jeff Birkofer picked it up and made a wild throw to first, allowing Chad Clark to score from second base. The next error came on a routine grounder to second base off the bat of Kyle Schwarber. Blaine Tanner appeared ready to trade a run for an out with O’Conner headed for home, but he made a poor throw to first that pulled Kane Sweeney off the bag and let Casey Rodrigue head home. Run-scoring singles by Scott Donley and Brad Hartong capped the big inning. 12 men to the plate, eight runs, seven hits, two errors, one left on base.

Top 2nd: Back-to-back doubles to the right field gap from Nick Newell and Jeff Birkofer plate two for Morehead State. Three of the first five hits allowed by Morris have been doubles. The Eagles lead 3-0.

Top 1st: Robby Spencer leads off the game with a standup double to right field and scores three batters later on Chris Robinson’s liner over the head of a diving Casey Rodrigue. Brad Hartong helps the Hoosiers out of the inning by throwing out Robinson at second base.

PREGAME: Indiana looks to continue its current eight-game winning streak this afternoon against Morehead State at Bart Kaufman Field. Christian Morris will be on the mound for IU against Morehead State’s Matt Anderson.
