Indiana qualifies five athletes for NCAA Championships

Hoosier Trio Punch Tickets for NCAA Championships  

Buckley advances to NCAA Championships in shot put, Hunter qualifies in 1500m run and Matt Schwartzer makes it in 5000m run.


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Kyla Buckley is headed back to the NCAA Championships for her fourth consecutive appearance and junior Rorey Hunter will make his second appearance at the NCAA Championships. Matt Schwartzer will make his first appearance at the NCAA Track & Field Championships as the trio qualified with their performances Saturday at the NCAA East Prelim.


Buckley had the fourth best throw in the shot put competition with a mark of 16.98m (55-8.5) to advance to the national meet. Buckley finished in ninth-place at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn Second Team All-American honors and took the indoor and outdoor titles this year at the Big Ten Championships.


Hunter won his heat of the 1500m run to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in a time of 3:45.85. Hunter, who was part of the Indiana distance medley relay team that finished third to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships this year, won the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championship in the 1500m run.

Schwartzer finished fifth in his heat of the 5,000m run in 14:11.63 to take one of the automatic qualifying spots to the national meet.

Also competing for the Hoosiers on the day was junior Drew Volz, who cleared 5.27m to finish 13th in the pole vault. Freshman Amanda Behnke finished 34th in the 5,000m run in 16:51.

The Hoosiers have five student-athletes who have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore. Along with Buckley, Hunter and Schwartzer, senior Kelsie Ahbe and sophomore Sydney Clute qualified in the pole vault.
