Pregame notes from IU-McGill

MONTREAL — We’re settled in at one of the hottest gyms I’ve experienced in quite some time. McGill counts Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler as alumni, while Dr. James Naismith also studied and taught here.

Then he created basketball.

I put this out there earlier, but you can stream tonight’s game at the following link:

If there are problems with the stream, I won’t be able to help you. But I hope it works.

IU starters: Troy Williams, Yogi Ferrell, James Blackmon, Robert Johnson, Devin Davis.

It’s the second straight start for Davis, while Johnson moves back into the starting five in place of Nick Zeisloft.

I asked Tom Crean about his lineups and rotations after last night game and, as expected, he said not to read too much into them right now. But it’s been interesting to watch how each of the different looks have worked together through three games. Obviously, IU is missing two big pieces in its frontcourt, so these early glimpses aren’t as telling as we maybe would like.

It’s August, after all.

“I would say we’ll get more value from that when we get home and look at that,” Crean said. “We keep our plus-minuses, we keep our lineup systems, but after two games, there’s very little to take from that because one was a 40-point game, one was a close game the entire way. We’ll be able to balance more of that out when we get home. … Right now, in my mind, it’s feel of the game. It’s trying to get more guys in there, it’s trying to play through the 24-second clock and (Monday) I thought with the way that we played and the mindset that we had, there wasn’t going to be a lot of experimentation.”

This is the 114th season of basketball at McGill, the two-time defending RSEQ conference champions. The Redmen will be without coach David DeAveiro tonight. He’s overseas with the Canadian national cadet team.
