Thon Maker at No. 1 in Rivals’ updated 2016 rankings

Rivals updated its rankings for the 2016 class on Thursday and Indiana target Thon Maker is No. 1.

Maker is a 7-foot center from Virginia, who’s joined by a bunch of players with serious Indiana interest in the top 60.

Here’s Rivals on Maker’s jump to the top:

Maker can take big men off the dribble. He has developed a nice jump hook and a good turnaround jump shot along the baseline. What Maker can also do is start and finish fast breaks. Whether it is with the rebound or a blocked shot, Maker can turn from defense to offense and get from rim to rim at the highest level.

Maker does need to get stronger. He also needs to float in and out of games a little less often and be willing to impose his will more physically. But at the end of the day he is a big-time talent who has gotten early attention at the highest level from programs such as Arizona, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA and many more.

The top 60 also includes Arkansas guard Malik Monk at No. 6, and 6-foot-9 California forward T.J. Leaf at No. 18 — both of whom have five-star distinction.

De’Ron Davis, a 6-foot-9 Colorado forward, is No. 34, while Tennessee forward Braxton Blackwell and Oregon guard Payton Pritchard are back-to-back at Nos. 38 and 39. North Central’s Eron Gordon is No. 44, followed by Lawrence Central’s Kyle Guy at No. 60. Southport center Joey Brunk is No. 137.

  1. If he is 5 star player…Indiana will probably finish in top 10 in his recruiting meaning he will go somewhere other than IU.
