IUWBB: Indiana vs. No. 6 Maryland

FINAL: Maryland 84, Indiana 74

Teri Moren kept calling timeouts down the stretch as IU nearly matched Maryland bucket for bucket. Amanda Cahill intercepted a pass, hit Alexis Gassion and then Gassion stole the inbounds for another bucket to make it a 10-point game with 24 seconds left. But the lead was too great. The Terrapins hits some free throws in the double bonus to extend their lead.

With 3:53 remaining, a little more life now. A turnaround jumper in the post by Jenn Anderson, who had missed her fair share of buckets close to the basket, gave her an and-1 and made IU’s deficit 11, 70-59. But Anderson was called for her fifth foul shortly thereafter, trying to draw a charge; the Terrapins miss both free throws, but Brionna Jones gets the offensive rebound and scores to push it back to 72-59.

With 7:46 remaining, signs of life from Indiana. It’s a 65-50 lead for Maryland, but IU has seen some gritty play from Tyra Buss, who drove into contact and converted an and-1 to make the score 61-43. She then dribbled around a defender — screened off by Amanda Cahill — got into the lane and found Alexis Gassion for a lay-in.

With 13:32 remaining, it’s 59-40 Maryland.

With 15:36 remaining, Maryland is maintaining a 55-33 lead. Tyra Buss had a nice play, taking a turnover down the court and dropping it off for Larryn Brooks for a lay-in. But Jenn Anderson follows that up with a couple of misses from point-blank range. The Hoosiers just can’t connect in bunches. The Terrapins can.

HALFTIME: Maryland 47, Indiana 29

That 3-point game midway through the second half turned into a 18-point halftime advantage for the Terrapins. Their shot was just too lethal. Tyra Buss leads IU with eight points. Jenn Anderson has seven points and five rebounds. But Maryland’s Lexie Brown has 11 points and six rebounds. Two other Terrapins, Malina Howard (8) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (9) are threatening to reach double figures.

A 23-15 advantage on the boards, for Maryland, as well as shooting 63.3 percent to IU’s 25.8 percent.

With 3:34 remaining, Maryland is now up, 36-23. Indiana is 7-of-25 from the field (28 percent), including 0-of-10 from 3, while the Terrapins are hitting at a 16-of-24 (66 percent) clip.

With 7:45 remaining, Maryland is steadily expanding its lead, 29-20. Tyra Buss had a steal and a lay-in to make it 23-20, but Maryland has scored the last six points. On one key possession, Larryn Brooks and Taylor Agler both missed 3s — being that the Hoosiers came up with two offensive boards — but they weren’t able to convert after finally finding Alexis Gassion cutting to the basket, but missing. Maryland came down on the other end a nailed a jumper. Those little swings count.

With 11: 38 remaining, Indiana has fallen behind, 19-15. But the Hoosiers are hanging with the No. 6 team in the country, thanks to the right-hand of Jenn Anderson in the post delivering a couple baskets. Tyra Buss is also being aggressive, attacking the basket. She is getting knocked around, but she keeps going back for more. She will be shooting free throws after the timeout.

With 15:49 remaining, Indiana is out to a 7-5 lead on Maryland. Tyra Buss hit one of two free throws, then was the recipient of a Larryn Brooks steal for a transition layup to make it 3-1. Alexis Gassion followed that with a baseline jumper on the next offensive possession. Maryland, however, brought it back to 5-5 with a couple of quick buckets. Brooks hit a couple of free throws to bring us to this score.
