IU the frontrunner for Thomas Bryant?

Immediate frontcout help could be on the way to Bloomington.

At least that’s the indication given by recent comments by four-star IU target Thomas Bryant, who told the Louisville Courier-Journal’s Steve Jones that Tom Crean and the Hoosiers are recruiting him the most as his expected announcement nears.

“They send me a ton of damn letters,” Bryant said during workouts for Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American game in Chicago.

Indiana, Syracuse, Kentucky and Missouri are all still in the running for Bryant, who could make an announcement as soon as this weekend after he competes in the DICK’s Sporting Goods National Tournament in New York.

The Huntington Prep center visited IU for its regular season finale on March 7, wearing a Hoosiers T-shirt and receiving a loud ovation from the remaining fans in Assembly Hall when he walked off the floor after the game.

“I loved the Indiana visit,” Bryant told the C-J. “Seeing all those guys, they all accepted me when I walked in, and it was like a family atmosphere there. Great fans always come out and support. It was really nice. … They need that one big man in the paint right there with them. If they get that, they could be a real good team down in the long run.”

Syracuse has been considered the favorite to land the 6-foot-10 Bryant, but it’s unclear what the recent NCAA sanctions have had on his recruitment. Bryant said he hasn’t heard from the Orange since January, but told reporters he remains under the impression that they would have a scholarship for him should he commit. Kentucky’s interest seems to have simmered, while Missouri appears to be fourth among Bryant’s final four choices.

Bryant also said that questions about Crean’s job security have not swayed his decision.

“He’s still going to be at Indiana,” Bryant said. “I saw the stuff that they support him 100 percent, and I’m happy about that.”

You can watch Bryant play in the McDonald’s All American game on Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

  1. Evidently T B is not jumping off a bridge at the opportunity to become a Hoosier. Seems to me he should be. Also if he becomes a Hoosier that would be one 6’10” big. IU needs 1 more 4.8 star or higher in addition to what they have coming in if they are going to be final 4 team….plus keep everyone happy.

  2. I’d really like to see a true 5 in the candy stripes as Zeller and Vonleh played the 5 out of necessity. From what I’ve seen of this kid’s tape he ENJOYS being on the block and banging in the paint. The most recent Hooser big I can recall with this mindset is Dean Garrett. TB assumes correctly that the team would be better with him, allowing HMP to slide to the 4 (and/or back up 5). I also believe Jeremiah April will contribute next season. When April entered the game (albeit rarely) he ran the floor hard and demonstrated pretty good hands. This program is missing a post presence, better decision making on the wings and a willingness to defend at all 5 positions. These deficiencies are certainly correctable when you have two (hopefully TB is the 3rd) long, athletic freshmen who will be competing for minutes in this Summer. Go Hoosiers!!!

  3. He still cant recruit because IF Bryant comes to IU; it would be for he fact of Syracuse sanctions more than Crean’s ability. Then we will hold our breath to see whether or not TB “developes” like JBJ. Even with all the accolades JBJ’s defense was more like a matador, he either never learned how to move to get his shot or Crean didn’t teach him . It was either stand and shoot or drive to the right. A lot of development took place (rolling eyes)
