Priller comfortable in and out of the spotlight

OMAHA, Neb. — From his seat at the end of Indiana’s bench, Tim Priller has turned into a cult figure in his first season in Bloomington.

The chants — “WE WANT PRILLER! WE WANT PRILLER” — the cheers and the laughs were perhaps a bit unexpected when Priller arrived on campus as a late signee in IU’s 2014 class. But the freshman says he’s taking his position as the Hoosiers’ human victory cigar in stride.

“That doesn’t really bother me or get to me,” Priller said. “The season’s been really great. I love it here. I love my teammates and I love the coaches.”

Priller has appeared in only eight games for IU, scoring two points — which came in the season opener against Mississippi Valley State — and grabbing three rebounds.

While his teammates held up against the crush of reporters who descended upon IU’s locker room Thursday, Priller sat in silence next to James Blackmon Jr. A couple Hoosiers dealt him some playful ribbing, while acknowledging the juxtaposition of sitting Priller next to one of the team’s most requested media subjects in Blackmon.

Beyond the game, the 6-foot-9 forward from North Richland Hills, Texas has become a popular figure both among IU’s student section at Assembly Hall and on campus. Although sometimes when he’s walking around the latter, his college classmates have a difficult time differentiating Priller from a teammate.

“Me and Collin Hartman get mistaken for one another a lot,” Priller said with a smile. “A lot of people call me Collin sometimes. I just tell them, ‘Actually, I’m Tim.’ They all laugh at me.”
