Hoosiers host Spartans for series opener #iubase

FINAL: INDIANA 6, MICHIGAN STATE 1. Ryan Halstead shut down the Spartans in the ninth inning, helping Indiana to its second consecutive win and an optimal start to another important weekend series. Scott Effross earned the win, his third, after 4.1 innings of shutout relief. Brad Hartong finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Scott Donley also added three hits for the Hoosiers.

EIGHTH INNING: Really nice night for Scott Effross, who held the Spartans scoreless over his 4.1 innings of work. He allowed only one hit, walked one and hit two, while throwing 41 of his 57 pitches for strikes. Setup man Luke Harrison came in and worked around a one-out double to keep Indiana’s lead intact. In the bottom half, Brad Hartong came up with his third RBI of the day when he drove in Craig Dedelow on a two-out double to the centerfield wall. INDIANA 6, MICHIGAN STATE 1.

SEVENTH INNING: A really nice relief outing from Scott Effross has kept a 3-1 Indiana lead intact. Effross has tossed 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit and one walk. He got out of a one-out jam with runners on the corners when Isaiah Pasteur fielded a grounder and nabbed Alex Troop at the plate. Effross is up to 57 pitches — 41 of which have gone for strikes.

IU added two more runs to Effross’ cushion in the bottom half. Casey Rodrigue scored on an RBI single by Brad Hartong, who came around moments later on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Richardson. INDIANA 5, MICHIGAN STATE 1.

FOURTH INNING: Effross hit a pair of Spartans, putting two men on base with two outs. Cam Gibson nearly made him pay for it, launching a deep fly ball to the warning track before Will Nolden caught it just in front of the wall for the final out of the top half. IU added another run in the bottom half when Will Nolden drove in Austin Cangelosi on a single to left field. INDIANA 3, MICHIGAN STATE 1.

THIRD INNING: Kyle Hart goes only two and two-thirds innings after throwing 57 pitches, including 40 strikes. Coming into tonight, he hadn’t thrown more than 43 pitches in any of his first four appearances. IU coach Chris Lemonis brought in Scott Effross from the bullpen, and the right-hander struck out Ryan Richardson looking at a fastball to get out of the inning. In the bottom half, Brad Hartong put the Hoosiers ahead on an RBI single that scored Casey Rodrigue. INDIANA 2, MICHIGAN STATE 1.

FIRST INNING: Kyle Hart started the evening with a four-pitch strikeout before serving a solo home run to Ryan Krill, the second batter he faced. Indiana answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundrule double from Logan Sowers. MICHIGAN STATE 1, INDIANA 1.

PREGAME: After stealing a win over Notre Dame on Tuesday at Victory Field, Indiana returns to Bloomington to begin a three-game series with Michigan State at Bart Kaufman Field. All the conference games from this point forward are important for the ninth-place Hoosiers, but this series represents a good opportunity for IU to make up some ground against a comparable team before taking on Ohio State and Maryland down the stretch. The Spartans enter the weekend in sixth place.

Making the start for IU is Kyle Hart, who has made four appearances this season, including two starts. He hasn’t gone longer than two innings, nor has he thrown more than 43 pitches over those four outings. Hart, who is on the road back from Tommy John surgery, appeared out of the bullpen on April 12 and 15.
