IUWBB: Hoosiers officially introduce Kemokai

Indiana officially announced the addition of junior college point guard Victoria Kemokai Thursday, marking Teri Moren’s third addition of the offseason.

Kemokai was a first-team All-American in the JUCO ranks in 2014-15, averaging 15.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game for Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

Kemokai will be a junior next season and is immediately eligible. Moren offered high praise for the 5-foot-3 guard in a statement.

“Victoria is a great addition for us,” Moren said.  “We set out to find the best available point guard in the country, and we are excited to bring her to Indiana.  Victoria played for a great coach in Trenia Tillis-Jones, so she knows how to play.  She has great quickness, along with the ability to score the basketball.  The one thing that set her apart from most other guards is her ability to defend.  We are very excited about her ability to lead our team.”

As Tyler’s point guard, Kemokai led the Apaches to a 29-5 record last season. She joins Wabash Valley’s Tyshee Towner and Marquette transfer Tia Elbert in the backcourt, essentially taking the place of outgoing transfers Larryn Brooks, Taylor Agler and Maura Muensterman. Elbert, a freshman, will have to sit out a transfer year.

In the front court, IU will be bolstered in 2015-16 by two incoming freshmen, 6-foot-2 forward Kym Roysters (Newark, Ohio) and 6-foot-5 post Danielle Williams (Fort Worth, Texas).

  1. Defense, defense, really? What makes you think a 5’3″ guard will stop anyone when we had a 5’5″ guard who was freshman all conference couldn’t? Do’t see how this recruit helps us?

  2. M.C Defense: I was referring to T. Moren comments as she was describing 5’3” recruit having ability to defend. In another post I stated I see this player as someone who could set on the bench and play a few or certain minutes in game situations. How long, would depend on game time situation. I think it is ok to have this type of player if everyone is going to be satisfied or happy about that type of role player meaning, player and coach. Having said this regarding current roster, all other recruits including guards need to have good size (guards = 5″10″ or taller) (forwards = 6’2″ or taller) (centers w/ability = 6’3″ or taller) at her respective position. At center IU recruit that is coming in at 6’5″ is a pretty big project. I would be pleasantly surprised if that all works out in a couple of years, but the current status of program I think it is a good project to work on if Daniels has the perserverance to seriously get involved and stay with the program. Currently, IU women have enough short or shorter players.

  3. t. agree with everything you said. Our team this past year was deficient in size at every position. With the addition of Towner at the guard position and Royster at the forward/center position, we are headed in the right direction. Having seen videos of Royster, I really believe she may have the same impact for us that Cahill had this past season, Royster is very athletic and can really run the floor. I, like you believe that Williams will be quite the project. Maybe a couple of years away. If we start the season next year with Cahill, Anderson and Royster up front, we will be pretty competitive. I like the looks of that.

  4. I believe T really likes Royster and so do I . I have watched her vid several times she looks like the real deal can do whatever is needed, run the floor , play facing the basket or not , block shots and shoot the 3. Just tell me what you need coach I can do it.

  5. We need her to pass classes too so i hope she does that. I have a feeling our team GPA is gonna take a dive.

  6. Im seeing where Kym Royster has a lot of good things said and awards. Shes listed as one of the most improved of the 2015 class– also saw where she is Ohio’s ‘ Division 1 Co-Player of the Year. The same site also lists her as 6’ 3″ I hope she is.

  7. Do you really even care if GPA takes a dive? If they meet GPA eligibility requirements and were winning big enough you could care less. You would be to busy focused on wins. So don’t give me the team GPA crap taking a dive. Grades meeting eligibility requirements and above are just fine. If you do get high academics GPA that is even better but not required.

  8. Did Royster have offers from major women BB schools besides IU? That was a great fast recruit for a brand new coach at the time in her set of circumstances.

  9. I think a good coach wouldn’t have her gf (or rabid unquestioning supporter) on the scoop praising one good recruit and claiming a special set of circumstances! Coaches are hired into awkward/unusual/not ideal circumstances all the time so the time for excuses and whatnot has passed i believe. And she can consider herself LUCKY that none of those other girls decided to transfer.

  10. T. Let me get this straight. Mens team is a joke. D. Davis is mediocre. Larryn brooks can’t play. All the other girls leaving are bad. Our new recruits gpa doesn’t matter. Doing the minimum is fine since they’re all there to play basketball. Coach moren is a great coach, all her recruits are great and the girls love playing for her. Did I miss anything? We are going backwards.
