Evansville at IU soccer

FINAL
That third goal seemed to take the air out of the balloon for almost everybody, and Indiana closes out a much-needed win that the Hoosiers hope puts them back on the right track with a road trip to Northwestern looming on Sunday. HOOSIERS 3, ACES 0

SECOND HALF
38:00: Indiana plays add-on via a quick trigger free kick that springs Billy McConnell on the right side. He crosses one in that Grant Lillard heads home at the near post for the Hoosiers’ first three-goal game and three-goal lead of the season. HOOSIERS 3, ACES 0

HALFTIME
After a strong first 15 minutes, Indiana hit a lull for about 20 minutes before getting back in the gas for the final 10. Hoosiers finish the half with a 13-6 advantage in shots, while Aces lead 4-3 in corner kicks. Hoosiers were in this same place a week ago at Butler with a two-goal lead and saw it evaporate into a tie. They’ll look for better this time around. HOOSIERS 2, ACES 0

FIRST HALF
5:02: Just a minute after Kyle Sparks stung a shot off the left post, Indiana finds the net for a second time courtesy of Femi Hollinger-Janzen. This one was the result of a Tanner Thompson throw-in deep in the attacking third, flicked on by Grant Lillard and a diving header by Femi puts the ball in. HOOSIERS 2, ACES 0

37:31: As flat as Indiana was on Sunday, Hoosiers are very aggressive at the outset against the Purple Aces. It pays off when Tanner Thompson centers a ball from the left side in the seventh minute that winds up at the feet of Corey Thomas, whose shot is blocked, but defender whistled for a hand ball. Femi Hollinger-Janzen places the ensuing penalty kick neatly in the right side of the net as the keeper dove the other direction. HOOSIERS 1, ACES 0

PREGAME
Indiana men’s soccer is out of the rankings this week, and the Hoosiers (3-3-1) will try to bounce back from Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Rutgers when they host Evansville (2-3) at Armstrong Stadium tonight. Some changes to the IU lineup, with Corey Thomas making his first career start as an attacking midfielder, while Phil Fives is back in the starting lineup after coming off the bench in the past week.
