Hart, Kelzer, Wilhite named baseball captains #iubase

The Hoosier baseball team has spoken.

Left-hander Kyle Hart, right-hander Jake Kelzer and infielder Brian Wilhite have been named team captains for the 2016 season through a clubhouse vote conducted by their teammates.

Kelzer, a former Bloomington South standout, chose to return to Indiana for his redshirt junior season after the Chicago Cubs selected him in the 14th round of June’s MLB Amateur Draft. Hart returned from Tommy John surgery last season and emerged as IU’s most reliable pitcher down the stretch, and threw seven innings and struck out six in an NCAA Tournament win over Radford in May. Wilhite also saw a boost in his production over the final month of action, posting a hit in nine of his final 11 games, including three multi-hit efforts.

“This shows a lot of respect for these three players and how they go about their business on and off the field,” IU coach Chris Lemonis said in a statement. “These are three upperclassmen that have played in a lot of big-time atmospheres, and I’m looking forward to having them help lead this team. Even though our players selected these three captains, we still have a lot of leaders in that clubhouse.”
