IU basketball to play at IPFW next season #iubb

Indiana basketball fans in Fort Wayne won’t have to travel far to see the Hoosiers in 2016.

IPFW athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton announced Tuesday that the Mastodons will host Indiana at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum next year as part of a three-game series with the IU basketball program. The two teams are already scheduled to meet on Dec. 9 this year at Assembly Hall, a matchup that will be followed with a game in Fort Wayne on Nov. 22, 2016. The two programs will meet again in Bloomington during the 2018-19 season.

“This game is an exciting opportunity for our program, the university and the city of Fort Wayne,” IPFW coach Jon Coffman said in a statement. “We appreciate Tom Crean’s openness to bring the Hoosiers to Fort Wayne and add to our city’s basketball tradition and history. This is a great opportunity for both fan bases, and we look forward to a packed Coliseum next season.”

Next year’s game will be the second time the Hoosiers have played a non-conference road game against an in-state opponent in recent years. IU traveled to Evansville in November 2011 during the Aces’ first season at the Ford Center.

IU has also played at Ball State (2002), Indiana State (2005) and IUPUI (2006 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse). The Hoosiers are 7-1 in Fort Wayne, and played Notre Dame consecutively one game each year in the city from 1960-67.

“To take our program to Northeast Indiana for the first time in nearly 50 years is an exciting opportunity for us,” IU coach Tom Crean said in a statement. “We look forward to the experience of playing in another historic venue and in front of an incredibly passionate fan base.”

The Indiana ticket office will handle ticket sales for the game at the Memorial Coliseum, and IPFW will have a limited number of tickets which will be made available for sale to its fan base through the IPFW ticket office.

IPFW game is the fourth non-conference opponent on the schedule for next season. The Hoosiers are also scheduled to face Kansas on Nov. 11 at Pearl Harbor, and will meet Butler in the Crossroads Classic on Dec. 17 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. IU will return to the Fieldhouse on Dec. 31 for the first game of a three-game series with Louisville.
