IUWBB: IU beats No. 24 Chattanooga, 54-43

Indiana claimed a 54-43 win over No. 24 Chattanooga at Assembly Hall Tuesday night.
The Hoosiers scored 23 points off of turnovers, while only giving up four. They also held the Mocs to 36 percent shooting and forced 18 errors.
Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 16 points, six rebound and five assists. Amanda Cahill finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kym Royster scored six points – all in order to give the Hoosiers a 39-37 lead early in the third quarter – and chipped in three boards.
The Hoosiers were able to push their lead to 45-37 on two straight layups by Buss, including an and-1 bucket.
Indiana took a 22-18 lead into halftime thanks to impressive defense. The Hoosiers held the Mocs to 23 percent shooting and forced nine turnovers. Indiana then produced 13 points off of those turnovers, compared to two points off of turnovers for Chattanooga through two quarters.
In one sequence, Tyra Buss pushed the ball up the floor, throwing in a behind the back dribble, before kicking out to Karlee McBride behind the 3-point line. McBride hit the shot, giving the Hoosiers a 20-18 lead. On the other end, Buss drew a charge, her fourth offensive foul induced in the half, then scored on a floater to give the Hoosiers a four-point advantage at half.

  1. As I stated on an earlier post, this was a very defensive orientated game from a start. Points were very hard to come by for both teams. This year’s increased defensive intensity inabled us to win this game. Tyshee Towner’s athletic ability and tough defensive approach has been a much welcome addition to this year’s team. Our improved defense helped cause 18 turnovers that lead to 23 points which was a major reason for our victory. We gritted this one out against a very good team. This is a game we would not have won last year! Coach Moren is turning this team into the strong defensive team that she knows is needed to win against good teams. Great job by the Hoosiers!

  2. Agreed– Great to see Kym have a good game and at the right time when they really needed her. Im guessing she will continue to improve and help this team. I dont think it can be stressed enough the importance of this win for the program. Great opportunity ahead in the semifinals. Win or lose they are already making a statement.

  3. t, you are correct, DePaul is a top 25 program and has been for the last 15 or 20 years. They are currently ranked # 19. Doug Bruno is an excellent coach and has been an assistant to Geno Auriemma for the USA National team and the Olympic team for several years. DePaul’s style of play for the last several years has been full court press and running at every opportunity. It is not unusual for them to take the ball after a made basket and still beat you down the court for a layup. They play at a frenetic pace! They are usually one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the nation. In their two games in the WNIT they have out scored their two opponents 182-115. They are shooting 50% from the floor. They have 4 players averaging double figures. So, as you can see this will be a very tough game for the Hoosiers. Go Hoosiers!!

  4. I hope IU has been working against the full court press with their practice players. That is Depaul’s bread and butter and IU will see it the entire game so they better be ready for it. If they cant handle it they could lose by 20 easy.
