3-star guard Devonte Green picks Indiana #iubb

Indiana added a fourth member to its 2016 recruiting haul on Saturday, picking up a commitment from New York guard Devonte Green.

The three-star recruit chose the Hoosiers over offers from in-state Iona, Iowa State and Kansas State, among others. Green, a 6-foot-1 combo guard, is the No. 6 overall prospect in the state of New York, according to the 247 Sports Composite.

“Coach (Tom) Crean is a great coach,” Green said after announcing his decision on News 12 Long Island. “I had a good time on my visit, people give great energy there and I like the campus and the school.”

Green is the younger brother of San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green. His commitment fills IU’s 13th and final allotted scholarship for next season, though others could open.

Indiana has already signed the other three members of next year’s recruiting class, including four-star combo guard Curtis Jones, four-star power forward De’Ron Davis and three-star Crown Point shooter Grant Gelon.

In Green, the Hoosiers may have landed a guard that has flown under the radar on the national recruiting landscape.

“I’ve seen improvement just from the summer time, just six months ago,” Green’s father, Danny Sr., said on News 12. “He’s been really working his behind off to get ready for his senior season. So far, he’s been having a really great year.”

Long Island Lutheran coach John Buck said Green is developing into a fine two-way player.

“He came in to us as a sophomore being known for his scoring, but through the years, he’s become a tremendous defender,” Buck said. “He really could become one of the best lockdown defenders in college basketball. I really believe that. He’s got length, he’s got quickness, he has a ton of ability on the ball. He’s gonna be just fine getting up the floor fast. That’s what we do and that’s what he’ll be able to do in college.”

  1. Wow! :Really beating out some big time programs for recruits…In the Nortwestern vs. IU goes down to the wire if game is played at assembly hall

  2. IF Crean is still around . I foresee some Guard Creanng….unless he uses “we’re too short and need of BIG men. Like Dingo stated above I ,too, thought we needed BIG men

  3. I too would have preferred a big man. But Higgi correctly identified this kid has a lock on the ball. Certainly looks like someone who can develop his talents into even more solid skills. I also like he is bigger than Yogi, handles the ball on par or better than Yog and if he can shoot we have a combo guard every D will have to account for. Like most years I’ll bet the recruiting isn’t over for ’16’. Maybe a big yet to commit.

  4. You guys are going to be very happy with Devonte. Not only was he born to play bigtime basketball against bigtime opposition, Devonte is a true floor general. To me plays like a physical Alan Iverson/Russell Westbrook offense that can shoot the 3. In big games against marquee names Devonte always outshines them. He should be NY state player of the year.
