Legendary IU track coach Sam Bell dies

Sam Bell, legendary track and field coach at Indiana University, died this morning at the health pavilion at Meadowood in Bloomington. He was 88.

Bell coached IU track and field from 1969 until 1998. He was inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of fame in 2003 and into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1992.

While coaching at IU, Bell’s teams won 23 men’s and four women’s Big Ten titles. He coached 11 athletes who competed as Olympians and was an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic team in 1976.
