Philadelphia selects Jake Kelzer in 18th round #iubase

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Indiana right-hander Jake Kelzer in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

It’s the third time Kelzer has been selected in the draft. The Bloomington South graduate was IU’s draft pick in 2015 when Chicago Cubs took him in the 14th round. Kelzer was also selected in the 22nd round in 2014.

Working out of the back-end of IU’s bullpen, Kelzer struck out 48 batters in 41 innings, walking only 12 and holding opponents to a .171 average. He was more consistent in a defined role after working between the bullpen and weekend rotation in 2015. After posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.84 last spring, Kelzer improved that figure to 4.00 this season working primarily off his low-to-mid 90s fastball and breaking ball.

“I think Jake Kelzer had a great year and a great finish at the Big Ten Tournament,” IU coach Chris Lemonis said. “I think he was up to 94 (miles per hour) there.”
